Cameroon 1 : 2 Denmark Ghana...... 1 : 1 Australia Netherlands 1 : 0 Japan
German football/soccer fans are terrified of a possible upset when they have to play Ghana, which could eliminate team Germany! Yeah! Upsets happen in soccer!
I'd love to see New Zealand beat Italy, but i wouldn't bet on it! I think Brazil will win, but not by much!
Today's matches, June 20: Slovakia vs. Paraguay - 20 Jun 1:30pm (South Africa Time) Italy vs. New Zealand - 20 Jun 4:00pm (South Africa Time) Brazil vs. Côte d’Ivoire

I'm not sure that there is such a thing as a patriotric European. Europeans tend to be patriotic about their own country, not the federation. I'm also not sure that they would want to 'humiliate' the USA. From the Americans on message boards, it seems that Americans feel that Europeans are anti-American, but my experience is that few are. Of course we love to have fun with you pointing out the differences between us (and, of course, claiming the way we do things is better), but I think it's just that, poking fun. Hi Riotgrrl! Maybe my choice of the word "humiliate" misses the mark, but if you love sports, competition and a challenge it's a lot of fun to try to beat another sport lover at his/her own game!
Call it "patriotism" or "politically correct hypersensitivity", but Europeans are as a rule much more sensitive to criticism or teasing towards their national sports, ethnic foods, etc. etc..than Americans! I can ridicule American sports and food and Americans will laugh with me!
Certain German football/soccer fans may resent it, if i poke fun at their sport. I had to learn that the hard way! I find the American way of learning to laugh and not being two faced about things refreshing!
I think a lot of nationalities, not just Americans, feel they're misunderstood in other cultures and think the negative stereotypes of their nation prevail!Oh I disagree! Europeans are usually fairly robust about slagging each other off - goodness, haven't you ever seen the way Scottish and English people slag each other off. It'c called banter. But my experience is the complete opposite of yours, in that I have always found Americans on message boards to be incredibly thin-skinned. I suppose the positive note is that we both seem to be saying that it's all just banter and good fun!

I suppose we err when we judge all of the people in an entire country a certain way. I'm an American but I'm very different from many Americans. This is such a large country. There are regional differences. Someone from a small town in Arizona near the Mexican border is bound to have very different views from someone who is a gay person living in downtown San Francisco or a stevedore working on the docks in Boston. An American violinist probably won't have a lot in common with a long haul truck driver. And a 26 year old Silicon Valley software software engineer probably won't see eye to eye with an offshore drilling rig worker in Louisiana. Putting all of those diverse personalities into the same bucket and describing Americans as being a certain way isn't valid. And how about English stereotypes? These are all correct aren't they? ->Men in London all wear bowler hats, pin striped suits, and carry a newspaper under one arm and an umbrella in one hand. ->The English are very serious, they don't use body language, they're very stiff and punctual (except at football matches) -> Brits do have a unique dry sense of humor. What they think is funny doesn't resonate with the rest of the world. -> The English subsist on fish and chips, tea, and warm beer. -> Brits are snooty and pretentious. They place great value on tradition (example: pander to the royal family) -> Hygiene challenged -- don't all shower or bathe every day. You'll find some really bad body odors in London elevators. Doesn't happen in America. -> The English are sexually repressed and uptight You've already been called, I see, on the confusion between English and British so I won't repeat that. I agree with you about 'America' being so vast; there is more than one American stereotype, from the gun-toting redneck to the New York fashion queen. Even uncontroversial stereotpyes - all Americans spend a fortune on their teeth and have an Osmond-like smile - are probably untrue for large proportions of the population. (And, of course, the reverse; people in the UK all have bad teeth.) I do enjoy national stereotypes as a great source of banter. Not just national ones of course; every town, city and village has its own stereotpyes that the surrounding towns, cities and villages use. In Ayrshire, for example, there are a large number of smallish ex-mining villages. You might think they would all be pretty similar, but among them people from Kilwinning are notoriously stereotyped as being 'thick'. In Glasgow, everyone from ANY of the Ayrshire villages is stereotyped as being 'thick'. and so it goes . . . Hungarians are suicide-prone. Czechs are all too busy reading poetry to earn a living. Swedes are notoriously unironic and given to nudity. The Dutch are tall and passive. Germans follow orders, eat sausages and have weird sexual perversions and no sense of humour. Serbs burn villages. Italians don't pay tax and are over-fond of their mothers. Etc. etc. etc. etc. There's jokes to be had in all the stereotypes, and if it's what you might call 'consensual banter' it can be hilarious. Nothing is laugh-out-loud funnier (in my direct experience) than a crowd of Rangers and Celtic fans watching the football together, as they will just slag each other off based on stereotypes to a hilarious extent. But the banter has to be consensual I think. As soon as the national stereotypes start being taken seriously, and used to make serious points, it can be really offensive. So, you might say to a good Hungarian friend 'Mind how you go now and try not to kill yourself on the way home'. But if you said it to a Hungarian on a messageboard that you had only briefly engaged with, it would be a little offensive. Yours, drunk, red-haired, wearing a kilt and swearing . . RG XOXO

That was a good and thoughtful post Riotgrrl.
In the USA ethnic jokes are quickly adapted to fit regional stereotypes. For example, what started out as a Polish joke or a Blond joke (about someone being intellectually challenged) will doubtless be turned into an Aggie Joke in Texas or a Hollander joke in Michigan. Aggies are graduates or students at Texas A&M University. Hollanders are Michigan citizens of Dutch descent concentrated in western Michigan. There are numerous other regional examples.
When I was a kid, ethnic jokes were more common than they are now. Or maybe I'm just in a different age group such that I don't hear them so often. There used to be a constant stream of ethnic jokes such as Polish, Italian, French, Mexican, Negro, etc. There were also religious jokes about Catholic Priests, Protestant Ministers, etc. Anything was fair game for a good joke. Political jokes the same.
Now I think that Political Correctness has raised it's ugly head in our society. It would be OK to tell a blond joke or an Italian joke but better not tell a negro joke or you'll be called out as a racist. That's too bad. Everyone should be able to take a joke when it is clearly intended as a joke and not an insult.

Can you imagine other countries forming (American style) football and coming over here and playing against NFL teams? and winning?? Actually.....I think that would be really awesome.....not the getting beat.....but the whole idea. Ok....but I swear I saw a story where some guy busted into the English players locker room right after the Princes had left and cussed them out because they aren't playing well? Is this right?

Hi Sadie! That would be amazing! The US and part of Canada are as far as i know the only countries that play US football!
Baseball has been exported to a number of countries and a good Japanese profi baseball team could beat a US baseball team. But US football is unique!
I'm sure the English football/soccer team is taking criticism. I have a suspicion that the team's financial backers behind the scenes are sick of a minority faction of English fans causing big trouble ( riots, fights, etc. ) and they're withholding financial support. A lot of Germans want their team to lose too so that misbehaving fans go back to being normal.

g.sports.yahoo.com/soccer/world-cup/news/fifa-drops-referee-after-dropped-call--fbintl_ro-fifaref062110.html QUOTE: PRETORIA, South Africa – Controversial referee Koman Coulibaly was left off FIFA’s list for the next batch of World Cup matches following the error that likely cost the United States a victory against Slovenia. Yahoo! Sports revealed on Friday that Coulibaly was “highly unlikely” to take any further part in the tournament after being given a poor evaluation by assessors following his decision to disallow Maurice Edu’s 85th-minute goal. FIFA confirmed Sunday that Coulibaly will not play any part in Tuesday or Wednesday’s matches, which will include the USA’s critical Group C finale against Algeria. Related Video Instead, as they step into the arena of Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Wednesday with their World Cup life at stake, the Americans will be officiated by a man who has just witnessed a combat far more brutal than any game in the tournament. [Photos: See more of controversial referee Koman Coulibaly ] Belgian referee Frank De Bleeckere will prepare himself for the occasion by watching a DVD of the movie “Gladiator” before taking center stage in a game that decides the USA’s destiny – with a victory guaranteed to put the Americans through to the round of 16. FIFA deliberately assigned De Bleeckere, a highly experienced and respected referee, to this game in response to the storm of controversy that came after the United States’ 2-2 draw with Slovenia. De Bleeckere has been in charge of big matches many times in the past, most notably a Champions League clash between Chelsea and Barcelona in 2006 which came a year after a pair of explosive matches between those European super clubs. “I don’t look at reputation or anything that has gone before,” De Bleeckere said. “I will watch the previous games of USA and Algeria to help me understand their tactics and work on my positioning. But I will watch ‘Gladiator’ first.” Referees at the tournament have come under heavy criticism after a series of bad calls compounded by a stubborn refusal to explain their actions publicly. On Monday, the FIFA referee committee tried to go on a charm offensive by inviting the media to an open day but totally defeated the object of the exercise by refusing to answer questions about specific decisions. Neither Coulibaly nor Stephane Lannoy – the French referee who erred in sending off Brazil’s Kaka against the Ivory Coast on Sunday – were present. Coulibaly’s assistant, Inacio Candido of Angola, was in attendance. When asked if the controversy following the Edu no-goal had affected Coulibaly, Candido replied: “A referee is like a player. When they lose an opportunity to score a goal, they put it behind them.”

2010 FIFA World Cup™: Latest Matches - Add to iGoogle Nigeria 2 : 2 South Korea Greece 0 : 2 Argentina Mexico 0 : 1 Uruguay France 1 : 2 South Africa I'm shocked by Uruguay's victory over Mexico! I guess the chili peppers in Uruguay have move pep and punch! Argentina is just about the only team that hasn't made a weak showing somewhere.
Wednesday; June 23 will decide whether the USA or England will advance! Slovenia, thanks to that referee's call against the USA, can hardly be knocked out! Upcoming matches: United States vs. Algeria - 23 Jun 4:00pm (South Africa Time) Slovenia vs. England - 23 Jun 4:00pm (South Africa Time) Australia vs. Serbia - 23 Jun 8:30pm (South Africa Time) Ghana vs. Germany

The USA must be really weak in soccer to lose to a third world country like Ghana. The average American won't know it happened. It will be reported in our newspapers (page 6 in the Sports section). No big disappointments.
The Tour de France starts next week. That's HUGE. The NBA player draft was two days ago. That's HUGE. There is a lot of buzz about Lance Armstrong -- can he win again at an advance age? The NBA draft had a huge TV audience. The USA National Football League teams go to training camp in July. The NBA summer league in Las Vegas (for prospects) the same month. Lots of great sports venues coming up. The World Cup is already forgotten and tuned out.

I heard Ghana was the African cup champion in football/soccer 4 times-consecutively i believe!
I like the way American fans find humor in the course of the game and the loss with the phrase: "Going! Going! Ghana!"

No big disappointments. To be fair to Americans they had a good World Cup. Most of their players play at a high level so it was no suprise that they got through the group, despite having two good goals chopped off, one of which was the most outragous mistakes I have ever witnessed in a World Cup. A real blooper by the ref! One of the things that struck me about the US team was the fact that they rarely took dives for fouls. I can think of perphaps two incidents were the player went down a bit too easy, but, by and large, that was rare. I think they were the better team over the two hours. Ghana were well drilled in defence and America were unable to break them down. On the other hand Tim Howard needs to look at himself for both goals. A top class keeper, but let his team down at the first and perhaps could have done better at the second.

You might like to delete your lovely girlwith the Union Jack flag flying; that's not really appropriate for this afternoon's game as the Union Flag represents the whole of the UK, and only one part of it is represented at the World Cup.
