It certainly can't be legalised unless the whole of Europe and probably the USA does the same.
Tourists are welcome, but not that kind, please!

If it is entirely legal, how about the options presented to women by Jobcentre Plus? Would you feel the same if your daughter was unemployed and this was being put to her when she tried to claim welfare?
If you couldn't pay your rent could your landlord insist you go on the game to get his money?

If you couldn't pay your rent could your landlord insist you go on the game to get his money? bit of a non argument....the landlord could no more insist on prostitution to pay the rent than he could insist on you joining the armed forces to pay the rent and as an option at the job centre...again a non but pure emotive argument........vacancies at the brothel are no more likely than a vacancies at the convent....[has any one ever seen a job vacancy for a nunnery or the local vocarage a well run brothel is to be vastly superior to a quick xxx againt the wall or some grubby little room[with the possibilities of children around] better and safer for the prostitute and better and safer for the punter and infinitely safer for any children who may be around

I still say that once it is legitmaste it could be something that a woman is required to consider, along with any other job offer. And yes, vacancies at brothels - why not?

I'm undecided, because I know some people argue that once prostitution is legitimised, more men see it as their right to have frequent sex, leading to more pressure to find cheap alternatives to expensive legal brothels - and the luring of girls from abroad just continues as before.
I can't tell you what basis they have for saying it though. ...Jade, you post on the right board for this, i THINK.

Its the oldest profession FFS!
Legalise it, tax and regulate it - it isn't going to go away.

Please. its been called a proffession longer than nursing or medicine... its a dirty game in our society and its seriously time to clean it up and what will be new about men thinking they have a ""right"" to sex...in fact am suprised the eu hasnt made it an ooman right and offered to pay the fees for the poor

If it isn't a mutual thing I can't see the point of it.

most real men will agree with you fret...but as we all know there are those who dont think that way sadly and will xxx anything with legs and is semi concious one only has to look at some of the prostitutes to realise some men really have no standards some women of course have a similar mindset

Indeed - that's why it is coupled with the word 'oldest' mouse Longevity does not = accuracy though. Fret - look up the definition of profession. Probably varies from dictionary to dictionary slightly by my OED says "Vocation or calling, esp. one that involves some branch of advanced learning or science"Trade would be slightly more accurate as one definition of that is something involving buy and selling. Craft, which involves skill in esp. practical arts might be marginally preferable. But yes, occupation would be better. Or why not just 'job'? There may be some women out there with unbelievable skills in the art of sexually arousing and satisfying men and pulling off a reasonably convincing show of liking it, but I am not sure that for the majority of women having to hump umpteen numbers of randy males to earn their next crust or fix qualifies as a profession. Though perhaps the use of "oldest profession" is society's way of dressing up the tawdry so we don't have to acknowledging the tackiness of it all. So, I'm with mouse. Given that it isn't going to go away do whatever is necessary to protect the women and, if possible, give them the route out that, if research is correct, the majority want.

i think the real proffesionls do offer a little more than ""janice down the entry"" which is why some brothels did better bussiness than others down the ages [ you get what you pay for[as in any other trade]cynthia paige..keeler..rice davis were certainly better paid than the average..heidi fliesh another madame who provided expert girls services and charged highly] janice down the entry is small but necessary fry
southwark used to be noted for its ""bath houses"" 10-13 century..a thriving trade across the river....i think for many it is a proffesion

Personally I don't get so animated about the nomenclature. We all know what prostitutes do, whatever term you choose to apply.

Deviating a bit.... I do know some reporters who liked to say journalism was a trade, not a profession, claiming that the latter word was over-used, whereas "trade" recognises that skill has to be employed.
