Dr. Laura Schlessinger is of course one of America's most popular talk show hosts! Very recently she tried to express her opinion concerning a double standard in the usage of the n-word, but apparently she went too far.
I used to listen to the Dr. Laura Show on AFN radio, but unfortunately it was canceled a few weeks before this controversy occured! Ironically AFN has replaced her show with a rap hip hop hour, which spews the n-word and the f-word out ad absurdum!

It is an interesting point; why should black people be able to get away with using the word with such frequency ?
If you turn the enemy's weapon into an object of fun, it can cease to hurt, I can see that. That is probably why Jews make so many jokes about Jews.
But if that is the intention of black humourists, it may have backfired on them. Wave something around too often and everyone will regard it as up for grabs.
But Dr Laura lost her argument for me when she said : "If you are that hyper sensitive about colour, and don't have a sense of humour, don't marry outside of your race".
A case of "engage brain before opening mouth", no?

It is a good job that she did not say "Motherf-----r." Then she'd really have been in trouble.

Dr. Laura did touch on a debate topic that this YouTube video follows up on.

Anna, that last link is a good debate....food for thought, eh? Hi SkyLark! Yeah i must admit that i never grew up Black or held Black slaves so i probably lack sensitivity or understanding in this subject. I've used the N-word in fits of anger at times, if i was reacting to the inappropriate behavior of certain Black/s. I'm just hotheaded, but i've had real nice contacts with other Blacks and would never use the n-word towards them. Since the Latin word for Black is the n-word minus a "g" i suspect the orgins of this word weren't meant to be demeaning or malevolent, but i fully respect the tabu surrounding this word and don't use it anymore.

It is not a word I would ever use . When you first put up this topic for debate I supported those who said that black people shouldn't either - except perhaps as part of infrequent and transparent comedy.
But the guy in the last video (I've forgotten his name already - Hall was it?) made some good points

the simple reality is that the word cannot be deemed offensive at all if blacks use it to each other. there is NO difference between a black walking down the street and calling out something like, "how ya doin' n..ga" to another black he meets, and anyone else using the word. there is also a difference betweens blacks and n's. there are alos n's of every race

A case of "engage brain before opening mouth", no? not at all. i VERY seldom agree with schlesinger about anything, but this time, she is a million percent correct, all the way around. as for the marrying, she's doubly correct. if you have such a character defect that you care about what other people say, or might say, you have no business doing it in the first place

"Boy" is nearly as bad.

The guy I called Hall (who is Hill) points out, women have begun taking ownership of the "B" word (bitch?) in order to "turn it around".
And when he puts it like that, I can see how someone who has been on the receiving end of abusive language may wish to take control of that language and turn it round to their advantage.
But who is to say that men who use the word aren't also trying to use it in the same cuddley way?
Best avoid it, all of us. That's my final answer!

I used to love a bitch, until she died (as dogs do). I can't use it as a term of abuse. It is not that, to me. When I hear the word, I think of her.

"Boy" is nearly as bad. who says? i don't disagree that, for the most part, it is used as a derogatory term. however, what it is used for is irrelevant once those to whom it has always been directed decide to use it in any kind of way. i used to have a friend named n..g.r george. that was what he called himself and expected everyone else to call him. and that was over thirty years ago. other than that, like i've said, the word denotes actions rather than race, and i only use it when it is deserved.

Here's another n-word debate video. I think some Blacks must be seriously struggling with their self image, if they're so offended and shaken by this insignificant Latin word. Anyone who doesn't agree can call me a "honky tonk" or the "n-word" for that matter!

Anyone who doesn't agree can call me a "honky tonk" or the "n-word" for that matter! But Anna, how would you feel about being called a Kraut or a Jerry, for instance? I know French people hate being called frogs, Italians being called wops, Spanish people dagos, and I don't like being called a gypsy either. Basically racial insults are (apart from anything else) being bad mannered. No one can choose what gender or ethnic group they're born into. An accident of birth is NOT a good reason to abuse people!
