I give chocolate to my husband to hide from me...however he doesn't hide it very well (e.g. his bedside nightstand...duh...that's too easy for me to find). I may just take you up on your offer, Sadie!

Ok...I don't hate the following food item.....it just doesn't appeal to me at all. It just seems to really bother other people that I don't eat it. Chocolate. My older daughter was allergic to all chocolate except the white variety when she was a child. As a result, she never developed a taste for it and will still choose fruit flavors instead. My younger daughter is a chocolate fiend. I like it in good recipes for cake, pie and fudge, but can take it or leave it when it comes to candy bars, brownies, etc..

I've heard that white chocolate isn't really chocolate at all because it doesn't have any cocoa in it. With that said, however, I really LOVE it.
Here's another thing I really can't stand...escargot! UGH! I tried them once and thought I was going to vomit at the table.

UGH! I tried them once and thought I was going to vomit at the table. Yep, that darned ol' escargot disgusts me everytime, too. Fortunately, it doesn't turn up too often - in my kitchen, not at all;. About the new (red) potatoes: The thing I dislike about them is that, to me, they have an earthy taste - like I'd imagine dirt tastes - and I'm also reminded, for some unknown reason, of earthworms. I use olive oil, too, and herbs (basil, paprika) and seasonings (veg. zest, salt, pepper) to change the taste, then roast them with other vegetables or add bread crumbs and roast them alone.

I don't like liver......gross! Or deer meat either! Lima beans. Had liver and mashed potatoes last evening; liver takes getting used to and is something I don't have to often and I actually like chicken livers better

White Chocolate......it's fine. I'll eat that occasionally. It's not something I seek out.
Escargot........if it's done well is really lovely. Even my 15 year old eats it. Course he likes squid, crocodile, crab claws.....that child will eat his weight in those.......oh well....he'll eat anything. Oh wait....he won't eat raw oysters but my two older children and I love them.
Ok...the red/new potatoes (I really don't know what to call the suckers anymore)...definitely have to cook them with a bunch of other stuff too......I agree.....a little too earthy otherwise.
Liver.....hubby loves it.....I have a friend that cooks it (really well) and I can manage to eat it once a year or so.....don't think I could do it anymore than that. Hubby loves chicken livers.

I'm can't stand offal: liver, kidney, hearts, tripe, yuk yuk yuk!
I'm very allergic to kiwi fruit so never eat that (but I do like the taste unfortunately)
I love all vegetables, and pretty much all fish - although I cannot stand prawns and lobster (not the taste but the texture)
Now you've got me thinking about food, I'd better go and start preparing dinner!

Who is your child, Sadie...Huck Finn? Eating snails, squid, crocodile, etc? Wow! You have one adventurous eater on your hands. My son doesn't eat anything out of the sea...not even fish sticks. And we live in Florida...where there's seafood everywhere (sigh).

Speaking of kids' likes and dislikes, does anyone have suggestions about how to get a pre-schooler to acquire better eating habits? My little nephew is 4 and just terrible. His pediatrician says that, with the vitamin supplements he takes, he's fine as long as he gets some fiber and meat. *But* , he doesn't like meat except for chicken nuggets, the rare slice of bacon and, occasionally, breaded fish. His mom gives him the V8 fusion drink in which one cup is supposed to equal a serving of fruit or vegetables. He will eat buttered corn a couple of times a week, and the random serving of g. beans and/or carrots, maybe once a month. No other veggies, though. On the plus side, he does like most fruit, and has apples, banana, canned peaches or mandarin oranges usually once a day. He likes (and makes a steady diet of) garlic bread, cheese pizza, chicken nuggets (Wendy's or home prepared in the over), grilled cheese sandwiches, spighetti with tomato sause (no meat) . . . and, of course, loves nabs and chips and almost any sweet. As I type this, it doesn't seem too bad, but in real time, it's worrying. For thanksgiving dinner - where a large variety was available, he ate a buttered ear of corn and a serving of banana pudding. For Christmas, he had a yeast roll and pumpkin pie. We worry . . .

I know from experience that (unless there are genuine allergic problems which you should of course have checked out) kids just try it on and it's a battle of wills to make Mum back down.
Of course sometimes you do but basically most of the time you have to plough on and just keep forcing them to eat stuff they don't like.
I know that's what my Mum did with all her kids if we wouldn't eat our greens or stuff like that.

When I was little (well, in fact right up into my mid teens) I ate very few vegetables, certainly no greens, and not much meat. Potatoes featured high on my list, with baked beans, sweetcorn, peas and broad beans. I was a very fussy eater and skinny as a rake (as you'd imagine). However, as I got older my taste in food changed and now I eat virtually anything (with a few exceptions, as above) I'm no longer skinny as a rake.

My child is one of the most unadventurous eaters...period. He's been that way since he started eating solid foods. My husband is the same way. My husband doesn't eat salad or any vegetables, unless they're in stews or soups. My mother in law tried everything to get him to be a better eater and nothing worked.
I've tried various strategies with my son, and I've firmly come to the conclusion that my son's pickiness is mostly inherited, and reinforced by my husband. I've found that the less I push and the less I promote a food, the better. He can eat what we're having for dinner or he can fix himself a PBJ sandwich. The only thing that's "worked" in trying new foods is our rule that he has to try one "new" food a week. I don't even care if he likes it or not, I just want to get his taste buds exposed to different tastes.
For me, I've found that my son needs to try a food several times before he likes anything new. Over time, I've been able to expand his repertoire of foods that he'll eat. For many years, however, I feared that we'd be serving chicken nuggets and PBJ sandwiches at his wedding reception.

Turning 40 (a few years ago) killed that. Used to be able to eat ANYTHING and as much as I wanted........now......I think I can look at something fattening and feel it.

It is a sad reflection on our image-obsessed world that anorexia and dieting are fashionable while people in the Third World starve.
If I absolutely had to choose I would vastly prefer an overweight person to an anorexic.

They both have mental problems so there is no worse or better with either; both will have maniy medical problems that can be solved with losing weight or gaining weight but the mind needs attention first.

I don't care for beef tongue, even a trace of fat on meats. nor hot hot peppers. Beer looks like (horse pizz) gross to me, so I don't drink beer.
