www.marketwatch.com/story/almost-40-of-europeans-have-mental-ills-study-2011-09-06?Link=obinsiteAlmost 40% of Europeans have mental ills: study CHICAGO (MarketWatch) -- More than 38% of the population of the European Union, or 164.8 million people, suffer from a mental disorder each year, according to a report released by the European College of Neuropsychopharmacology. The three-year study covered 30 countries (the entire E.U., along with Switzerland, Iceland and Norway) and included all age groups. It found that anxiety disorders were the most common, followed by insomnia and depression. Alcoholism/drug addiction and dementia were also in the top 10. And the study noted "except for substance disorders and mental retardation no significant cultural or country variations were found."

June - You may have correctly detected the fact that I am not a 'touchy-feely' person.
Do you differentiate the mentally ill from crazy people?

There are so many different types and degrees of mental illness.
Anxiety, depression, autism, schizophrenia, psycopathic personalities and so on.
Lumping them all together as if they were the same thing makes about as much sense as putting a cold on the same level as malaria or a dose of the clap on the same level as AIDS.

I don't know, BA, but I'm not a shrink.
I think they're classified as mental illnesses by the medics.
In my own experience you can be anxious and even depressed without being mentally unstable (and I notice from the original figures you posted that anxiety and depression did seem to be included so if you take them out the figures would be much lower).

Lin - I don't really consider anxiety and depression mental illness. Do you? allow me to answer here too BA ..... anxiety and depression are often symptoms of a more serious mental condition ... so to judge if anxiety and/or depression are mental illness/part of mental illness one would have to see the whole story individually with every single patient affected .. can't generalize here

I suppose it is a matter of interpretation.
I think of mental illness as describing the folks who are confined in mental hospitals. I mean the folks who are not able to function on their own and need to be locked up. For example, the man who thinks he's being followed by a large black dog.
I don't think of someone who takes pills daily for depression but is able to function normally without supervision as being mentally ill.

The figures apparently include people who have alcohol and other substance abuse problems. As you say. BA, it is all a matter of interpretation!
But we don't tend to lock up people just because they think they are being followed by a large black dog
