Just as well no one has said that. Anna in her role as poor wee diddums is pretending people (I) have said that. I have not as the thread shows but well done on feeding her attention addiction, she will be pleased ( as long as you aren't a male gay) If i ran into my dear "male gay" friend Reinhard i wouldn't hesitate to give him a big hug! He knows i have my opinions, but who cares! No one.

Ok....then the Vendetta area is obviously important. When things get too hot on the open board things should be moved......
The thing is....I believe most of the people on this board can have a hot debate and go on.....and continue talking on other threads..........it's when it starts becoming personal and things spiral out of control. So what is that point?

This is just another "beat 'em up" thread ... taking the place of the other bat'n' brawl thread and no more important than ... well .... a song by John Lennon. full of sound and fury and ... you know the rest. jmo Well I have asked repeatedly for input. Haven't gotten anywhere. Seems you are right. Just more of the same. I'm a fairly patient person and I'm getting tired of this. I can work to make the board better for everyone or not. Lin has made her feelings extremely clear. It doesn't seem any of you have heard her either. Personally I don't care if you pay attention to me. Most of you don't know me or owe me a thing. The same can not be said of Lin. If you want a board that is an enjoyable place to come to and debate you are being asked for feedback and your input now. If not....like she has made clear.....she can walk away and you can all continue to bicker somewhere else.

Lin: this is your board and you are quite at liberty to set any rules you want. If people don't want to abide by them you are entitled to ban them and they can go and set up their own boards. Democracy only works on message boards if people play by the rules they sign up to.
I would suggest - if you do want to keep your board going - that when a thread gets personal it is immediately switched to Vendetta, where an argument can be slugged out in private, or if the discussions violate the rules you've set you simply close it down and ban the offenders after one warning.
Whatever you decide it's not worth the time of day getting upset by it. Message boards are simply not worth getting upset over. Posters should be grown up enough to debate the argument without it getting personal.

"BUT do we really wish to entirely avoid or censure debates and controversies?" In the past the answer has always been yes. WRONG! If that were true, then vendetta board wouldn't be there. I FINALLY got to get out everything I always wanted to say to Wonder Woman and the same with her to me! That's just 1 example. Another example is I posted a lot of 9/11 truth stuff on here and didn't get censored. Pumpkinette, I really do love your sense of humour.

Here's my two penneth:
With regards to the board: perhaps if some posters stopped behaving like prissy head boys and girls with their silly posts and oneupmanship, things would calm down again.
There isn't much wrong with this board other than the perceived self importance of a few.
It would also help greatly if activity from other boards was not brought here. I know none of the boards or the background so for me and others it's really dull to wade through battles between gang A and gang B or, partners in crime who try and dominate. You'll never stop it but bugger me, it's fucking dull to post around
I am sure those who left will return when there is some equilibrium restored but, to me it does feel as if there is a cabal of posters who can post what the hell they like and are immune from the normal criticisms or questions. We've had Islam/Muslim bashing and now its male homosexuals. Not intelligent debate, not debate at all. just old fashioned ignorance and bullying behaviour. Tiresome and disappointing!
If it gets too bad people will leave, if it improves people will come back or new people join.

I think most of the responses on this thread have been sensible and I'm very grateful to people for them.
I'm not at all happy with a couple of people who have failed to recognise that they have been part of the problem.
If stopping people from bashing those of different ethnic/religious/sexual orientation is their idea of censorship then I suggest they go to a board where those sort of things ARE allowed.
I will NEVER let this board become a BNP type of forum and anyone who tries will find that their posts get moved to Vendetta/modified/or deleted.
If they persist in their nonsense they will be banned.
I hate coming the heavy but sometimes you can be too soft.
Even a liberal like me has my limits!

Can I also add that I think we need to be honest. For example Lin I have no idea if you mean me in your post. I would be happy for someone to say - "June, your puerile interjections of the toilet variety are never helpful" because i would never spot that myself, if you get me. I think I am hilarious! but I post to amuse me not anyone else.

Lin - This is a very good board and you are an excellent moderator/board owner.
Controversy is the lifeblood of any good board. You should want controversy. You should not want members to feel that they'd better not speak from the heart for fear of offending some other member or the host.
I'll be the first to admit that I couldn't agree with Riotgrrl, June, or Aubrey on the color of milk or anything else. They're welcome to their opinions and I don't look down on them because their opinions differ from mine. It's OK to have different opinions. I don't dislike them. I simply disagree with them.
I do enjoy a lively debate and don't want my posts to be censored or moved to vendetta.
You might look back and the jostling between myself and IamJumbo. The two of us agree on some topics but we differ strongly (understatement) on USA politics. That's OK. That's a good thing, not a bad thing, for a discussion board. i like Jumbo. I don't feel the need to label him a homophobe or a scumbag or any other derogatory term simply because we disagree on politics.
The one and only criticism I would like to express is that you've been too quick to squelch controversy. Controversy is a good thing not a bad thing. The best topics here have been on Islam and gay scoutmasters. Those topics have enlivened the discussion and really fired up this board. Let those topics run, don't squelch them.
A good board is not one where everyone is extremely polite and nice. Let the battles begin anew.
I'd like to know whether some of the members I most admire (Anna, Fret, Beth, Jumbo, BenLamond, etc.) agree with me.
I disagree with Firedancer who says that a thread should immediately be switched to Vendetta when it becomes personal. Those personal attacks are most often one sided. One angry member should not be able to move the entire thread to Vendetta because of his or her rantings.

However, I still think it should be a general rule of the board, that when posters choose to offer up bigoted comments about any group of people, they should have to offer evidence that what they're saying isn't something they pulled out their arse just to rag on those groups of people that offend their own personal preferences.

Thew scoutmaster thread was fascinating in that a few posters seemed quite blind to what others were saying.
I try to ignore the posts with personal gripes going on, so probably miss their pearls of wisdom on the subjects in hand because my filter system isn't that good.
I had wanted to reply to Jumbo's final post so could someone please PM me the code to get in there? Thanks

"I'd like to know whether some of the members I most admire (Anna, Fret, Beth, Jumbo, BenLamond, etc.) agree with me."
Although we disagree on most things, das, I agree that debate is stifled here. I moved on when the moratoria started - instigated by the usual suspects.
If you don't join in the groupthink here, you're trouble.
This isn't the first time RG has taken her ball home, I doubt it will be the last.
You know where freedom of speech is revered....
