There has been much trumpeting of a new beginning in British Politics. The Coalition has chosen to consult - up to a point - and hold a plebiscite on the electoral system preferred by the democratic majority. There has been talk of recall, yet the right of petition seems to have landed in the very long grass. But there is a one-off offer to the people, one that avoids the serious democratic right of petition.... Launching the Government's Your Freedom website, at which people will be able to propose ways to get rid of pointless regulation and unnecessary bureaucracy and reduce state intrusion into everyday life, is a move away from "the old way of doing things" - Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg. Clegg told the BBC: "We are turning things on its head. The traditional way of doing things is that government tells people what to do. That is the old way of doing things. We are saying, 'Tell us what you don't want us to do'." Ideas submitted in the online consultation process will be taken into account in the drafting of a Freedom Bill to be published this autumn with the aim of rolling back unnecessary regulation. Speaking in London today, Clegg will urge members of the public to be "demanding" about their liberties and their rights. Of course we know how this is really going to go and who will decide. Its farcical. The website will ask citizens three (very loaded) questions: * Which current laws would you like to remove or change because they restrict your civil liberties? * Which regulations do you think should be removed or changed to make running your business or organisation as simple as possible? * Which offences do you think we should remove or change and why? Participants will be able to comment on and rate ideas submitted to the site, with Whitehall departments responding to the most popular proposals. yourfreedom.hmg.gov.uk/There are scores of 'ideas', already. Ideas like... "Legalise cannabis in licensed areas and private property." "Cleanse our mental environment" "Castrate Paedophiles" "Bring back the Death Sentence" "Remove all speed limits on motorways" "Mince pies for all" Well, everybody should have a mince pie, shouldn't they.

Hi Frettie...hmmm
If the active ingredient of cannabis clears up glaucoma and eases the pain of cancer patients i'm all for the pharmecutical medical marijuana. I've tried it as a "party drug" and i personally hate it, but i wouldn't throw someone in jail for it.
Cleanse our "mental environment"! Didn't Stalin, Mao and Hitler claim to do just that?
The murderer of Marianne Bachmeier's 7 year old daughter Anna- a castrated sex offender on probation-showed us that violent paedophiles are sadistic and not hormone driven. Permanent exile in a profitable slave labor camp for our safety and theirs!
I'm very pro DP for the worst of worst! I truly believe the DP is a stronger deterrent than prison and the right message to send to potential murderers at large! The DP thus saves lives!
Germany does have some no speed limit highways, but the law is very double edged here. A case in point is that of a Mercedes test driver, who drove a speedy Mercedes at a speed of over 150 mph. A mother was foolishly driving in the fast lane with her child and was so startled by this driver that she had an accident killing herself and the child. The inevitable fine print of this law reads that if you drive too fast for "conditions"-e.g. rain, fog, snow, easily frightened motorists, etc. you are responsible for any accident.
No mince pies for me, if i want to stay slim and trim!

I like my cluttered mental environment, especially the sleazy bits Not sure that physical castration is the answer. Its barbaric and the same effect can be achieved using drugs. Definitely a No to the death penalty Some places need a speed limit, others don't. I can eat as many mice pies as I like and I don't puy on any weight.

Forget the Daily Fail, what do YOU think RV? This is a sham exercise in permitting the great unwashed to think they will really have some input on what is on the Statute Book. Right of petition at the standard 5% or this joke?

Definitely a No to the death penalty Some places need a speed limit, others don't. I can eat as many mice pies as I like and I don't puy on any weight. No problem with me Frettie! I just feel "dumbed down" with cannabis! The only party drugs that i enjoy are cocaine and speed and my life would be drastically shortened, if they were ever made legal and affordable.
Physical castration and testosterone blocking drugs don't stop sadists! They often heighten the sadism, if they don't have a hormonal release. These predators can also find a doctor, black market or internet source for male hormones, if they wish. Again permanent segregation from society is the solution.
Did you say "mice pies"??!! That sounds like one for the exotic meat thread.
Oh! The Mercedes test driver that i mentioned in my last post was prosecuted and convicted in a tabloid driven frenzy. He lost his employment and a lot more for driving as fast as the car would go in a no speed limit zone and scaring the young mother.

You will need to be a bit more specific; I totally do not know about this.
What "sillyness with fruit and veg" (and fish) do you mean?

Stuff like this... Inspectors told 53-year- old Tim Down he is forbidden even to give away the fruits, which are perfectly healthy. The father of three will now have to bin the 5,000 kiwis, costing him £1,000 in lost sales. Speaking yesterday from the stall in Bristol he has owned for 20 years, Mr Down said: 'It's total nonsense. I work hard enough to make a living without all these bureaucrats telling us what we can and can't sell. 'They're saying I'm a criminal for selling this fruit, but the real crime is that all this fruit will go to waste - all because it's 1mm too small. London Evening StandardAlthough the EU is going in the right direction by scrapping 26 rules, it is still bureaucracy gone mad to keep in place another 10 rules that mean you have to sell misshapen fruits in a separate section of the supermarket. This simply exposes the stupidity of the regulations Scottish Conservatives, European ParliamentWonky Fruit and Vegetables to Enter EU Market - Last December the European Union Member States voted in favor of commission proposals to cancel specific marketing standards for 26 types of fruit and vegetables. The initiative is part of the Commission’s ongoing efforts to simplify EU rules and reduce unnecessary bureaucracy. The Epoch Times

" We simply don't need to regulate this sort of thing at EU level…"
At last it seems they begin to understand that this obsession with micro-management only puts peoples' backs up and sets back progress for a generation.

with regards to the rip off merchant trying to sell undersized fruit at regular sized prices - good! he was attempting to rip people off, he wasn't selling 'undersized fruit at a knock down price - which is perfectly OK and legal - he was trying to sell them as grade 2 sized fruit at grade 2 prices!
The problem as always is not the EU but the fervour with which some pompous upstart (British) imposes the rules. No other EU state follows rules they see as silly, but, then again it gives the daily mail plenty to froth at the mouth about.
