If you were to stop pedestrians in the streets of Chicago and ask them these questions I would enjoy seeing their answers:
1. The average number of points scored by the winning team in a World Cup Soccer Match is: (a) 2; (b) 4; (c) 8; (d) 16
2. How many players on the field at one time in international soccer competition? (a) 6; (b) 11; (c) 16; (d) 18

More questions for the average Chicago pedestrian:
1. The World Cup is the top prize and competition for (a) Hockey; (b) Soccer; (c) Rugby; or (d) Lacrosse
2. The World Cup competition is played (a) Now; (b) October 2010; (c) February 2011; or (d) May 2011
I'd really be shocked if more than 20% could get the right answers.

Here's how the USA scored it's goal against England! Looks like the English goal keeper had some of that slippery Fish_n_Chips grease on his gloves! ;D USA 1 England 1

The big question For Chicago area people is whether or not they've heard of the professional major league soccer club: "The Chicago Fire"! None of my relatives in Northern Illinois have ever heard of it! I had to look it up in the internet to see where their stadium was. Every true Chicagoan has heard of the profi baseball, US football, basketball and hockey teams in Chicago!

The average number of points scored by the winning team in a World Cup Soccer Match is: (a) 2; (b) 4; (c) 8; (d) 16 You don't score 'points' at football, you score goals. And the team that wins (in a league situation) will get points for that. I'm so bored of Americans on Messageboards going on about how they don't like football or they don't know anything about football or whatever. The rest of the world does. it's a multi-billion pound industry. It provides a universal language . . there is not a country I have visited where, even if you don't speak the language, you can't get into company with the locals by talking about football. If the USA wants to be the odd one out in the world, that's fine, that's up to them. But please stop trying to make out that US disinterest somehow devalues the sport. The USA is out of step with the rest of the world on this one. Football is the international game, and the international language.

That is a particularly annoying trait

Just because we don't care about the sport should not lessen the sport nor the athletes....

I agree - the World Cup actually includes most of the world - unlike the American 'World' series ;D. That must confuse the buggery out of most Americans

You people struggle when it comes to evolution so you could be excused a complete ignorance of how many points 'a goal' represents. If you wanted to adress your County's complete lack of knowlege, and come up to the European standard then I wouldn't start with the rules of football.

Well, Alpha, as Gerrard is the current England captain I guess your level of support has risen!
It will be interesting to watch the US play Slovenia because both teams seem to find it hard to score goals.
I can't see England doing worse than beating Algeria comfortably - 2 or 3 goals to 0.

Club before country for me (although I do notice a marginal increase in my normal levels of jingoism during the World Cup & Euro Championship) AH Germany beat Austrailia 4 to 0 on Sunday and there was a lot of celebration and streets were blocked by celebrating fans as usual. Only football/soccer game victories bring out the jingoism in Germany. A loss causes a deathly silence.

You remind me of Grumpy, when you go on like this.
There is a national league baseball team in Stuttgart, Germany called the Stuttgart Reds and a US football team called the Stuttgart Scorpions! True! Only about 10% of Stuttgart residents are aware of these teams, but no one accuses them of being stupid because of this! Well maybe you would if you had a different upbringing! ;D

Well maybe you would if you had a different upbringing! ;D The difference is that I have never read anyone from Stuttgart post on a message board to that effect. I personally do not have a problem with the fact most American don't watch or enjoy football. Why should I? it is entirely their choice. I have a problem with Americans posting on a message board that appear to take delight in people's abject ignorance. I would be the first to admit that I am not a big fan of American sports like basketball, baseball or even American football. But if there is a thread on it, I am not going to go on it and tell everyone that I have no interest in these games. Why bother to go onto a thread that you have no interest in to tell everyone that you have no interest in the subject? Surely the best way of showing you have no interest in the subject is simply to ignore the thread? Why do people like Das post on a subject that he clearly has no interest in, yet feels the need to tell us that? According to what I have read there is going to a NFL game in Wembly this year. No doubt there are people in this Country who do not know the difference between a naked bootleg and a nickle defence, but why would we expect them to tell everyone that? Why would such ignorance be a source of pride for anyone? I have no idea what percentage of people know what the term 'NFL' stands for, but if it was lower than 20%, I would be ashamed of that, not posting it on a message board.

I agree with RV here and Riot earlier.
If you aren't interested in the World Cup find another thread to post on - quite simple really.

Everyone, who has posted on this thread has shown an interest in this topic! Even if it was to mention that most Americans aren't aware of professional football/soccer, it's rules, etc..! No one posts on a thread that is truly uninteresting to them!
We wouldn't kick "uninformed" Europeans off a thread dedicated to baseball or US football either now, would we??

Plenty of Germans have told me they find US baseball boring or at best incomprehensible!! Big deal! Some Germans themselves knock European football as well! I don't see why anyone should be censored here for that!
I understand the "religious attachment" that some fans have to their favorite sport and how they're peeved when others show less "reverence"! This is however a discussion board or should we have "football fan only threads"? That leads of course to "atheist only threads", "Christian only threads", etc. etc. Rather absurd for a discussion forum!

If you aren't interested in the World Cup find another thread to post on - quite simple really. why find another thread if the topic is football surely the antis have as much right to say so as the suporters if England made it through i would have to watch the game because of the chaps in the family..i might even get caught up be disaointed at a loss....but its not some thing i would deliberately stay in to watch or get madly excited about and when foriegn refs have to learn English swear words to cope with and know when english players are insulting or needa card or sending ..its a pretty poor do and hardly some thing to be proud of........
