But please stop trying to make out that US disinterest somehow devalues the sport.
That is a particularly annoying trait

Just because we don't care about the sport should not lessen the sport nor the athletes....

More questions for the average Chicago pedestrian: 1. The World Cup is the top prize and competition for (a) Hockey; (b) Soccer; (c) Rugby; or (d) Lacrosse 2. The World Cup competition is played (a) Now; (b) October 2010; (c) February 2011; or (d) May 2011 I'd really be shocked if more than 20% could get the right answers. I agree - the World Cup actually includes most of the world - unlike the American 'World' series ;D. That must confuse the buggery out of most Americans

If you were to stop pedestrians in the streets of Chicago and ask them these questions I would enjoy seeing their answers: 1. The average number of points scored by the winning team in a World Cup Soccer Match is: (a) 2; (b) 4; (c) 8; (d) 16 2. How many players on the field at one time in international soccer competition? (a) 6; (b) 11; (c) 16; (d) 18 To be fair though, I doubt your guys would score too highly on many subjects, let alone football. You people struggle when it comes to evolution so you could be excused a complete ignorance of how many points 'a goal' represents. If you wanted to adress your County's complete lack of knowlege, and come up to the European standard then I wouldn't start with the rules of football.

Well, Alpha, as Gerrard is the current England captain I guess your level of support has risen!
It will be interesting to watch the US play Slovenia because both teams seem to find it hard to score goals.
I can't see England doing worse than beating Algeria comfortably - 2 or 3 goals to 0.

Club before country for me (although I do notice a marginal increase in my normal levels of jingoism during the World Cup & Euro Championship) AH Germany beat Austrailia 4 to 0 on Sunday and there was a lot of celebration and streets were blocked by celebrating fans as usual. Only football/soccer game victories bring out the jingoism in Germany. A loss causes a deathly silence.

You remind me of Grumpy, when you go on like this.
There is a national league baseball team in Stuttgart, Germany called the Stuttgart Reds and a US football team called the Stuttgart Scorpions! True! Only about 10% of Stuttgart residents are aware of these teams, but no one accuses them of being stupid because of this! Well maybe you would if you had a different upbringing! ;D

Well maybe you would if you had a different upbringing! ;D The difference is that I have never read anyone from Stuttgart post on a message board to that effect. I personally do not have a problem with the fact most American don't watch or enjoy football. Why should I? it is entirely their choice. I have a problem with Americans posting on a message board that appear to take delight in people's abject ignorance. I would be the first to admit that I am not a big fan of American sports like basketball, baseball or even American football. But if there is a thread on it, I am not going to go on it and tell everyone that I have no interest in these games. Why bother to go onto a thread that you have no interest in to tell everyone that you have no interest in the subject? Surely the best way of showing you have no interest in the subject is simply to ignore the thread? Why do people like Das post on a subject that he clearly has no interest in, yet feels the need to tell us that? According to what I have read there is going to a NFL game in Wembly this year. No doubt there are people in this Country who do not know the difference between a naked bootleg and a nickle defence, but why would we expect them to tell everyone that? Why would such ignorance be a source of pride for anyone? I have no idea what percentage of people know what the term 'NFL' stands for, but if it was lower than 20%, I would be ashamed of that, not posting it on a message board.

I agree with RV here and Riot earlier.
If you aren't interested in the World Cup find another thread to post on - quite simple really.

Everyone, who has posted on this thread has shown an interest in this topic! Even if it was to mention that most Americans aren't aware of professional football/soccer, it's rules, etc..! No one posts on a thread that is truly uninteresting to them!
We wouldn't kick "uninformed" Europeans off a thread dedicated to baseball or US football either now, would we??

Plenty of Germans have told me they find US baseball boring or at best incomprehensible!! Big deal! Some Germans themselves knock European football as well! I don't see why anyone should be censored here for that!
I understand the "religious attachment" that some fans have to their favorite sport and how they're peeved when others show less "reverence"! This is however a discussion board or should we have "football fan only threads"? That leads of course to "atheist only threads", "Christian only threads", etc. etc. Rather absurd for a discussion forum!

I understand the "religious attachment" that some fans have to their favorite sport and how they're peeved when others show less "reverence"! What are you talking about? No-one is 'peeved' regarding other people's non interest in football. There are people in this Country, millions in fact, that have not the slightest interest in football or the World Cup. The rest of us can enjoy football without them. Really, what difference does it make to the rest of us if the majority does not watch it? Absolutely nothing! Think back to the Superbowl. Outside of the USA, hardly anyone watches it. In the UK for example, the superbowl is on BBC2, which is a minority channel. It is on that Channel because few people are interested in it. Do you think for one second that millions of Americans are a bit 'peeved' that less than half a million British people are even interested in it? I seriously doubt it. I don't think they even would think twice about it. Have you EVER heard an American say, 'gee I wish this game was enjoyed everywhere else'. Or do they just enjoy the sport on their own terms? Throughout the World there are millions of people who enjoy the World cup. Can you think of a reason why I would be interested in the thoughts of people who are not in the slightest bit interested in football? Can you think of a single reason why anyone would be interested in the opinions of a man who thinks the rules of football are messed up because you can't use your hands?

why find another thread if the topic is football surely the antis have as much right to say so as the suporters Of course, but to post 'I am not interested in this subject' seems rather redundant. Then saying 'most of my fellow Americans have no clue about either' seems, well rather odd to me. When most of us see a thread or a post that we have no interest in, we simply ignore them. BA and Anna post huge 'copy, cut and pastes' on a number of subjects which I totally ignore, yet for some reason BA admirer has felt it important to tell us that most Americans could not follow the rules of football, why? One of the biggest cliches in recent World Cup broadcasting is to find Americans and get them to explain what they know about football, with 'predictable' results. They show us people who get mixed up with the boatrace, think Manchester are the favourites cannot follow the rules etc. In other words it is an excuse to show Americans are thick, which is really sad because it is not really relevant. When the NFL comes here this year and they do a vox pop here, I would hope we Brits would make a better stab at it. Okay, I doubt we would get the finer details, but I would at least like to think we could work out and have an educated guess at what a touchdown or an extra point is.

Dearest RV! BushAdmirer is clearly interested in the World Cup since he takes the time to comment here! I did play European football/soccer in the US only because our high school sport teacher was from Scotland! At that time i could only name US sport heros and was appalled that we were encouraged to hit the football/soccer ball with our heads and breasts! On the other hand, living the other half of my life in Germany i do get infected with the enthusiam that the World Cup matches bring! I really have a feeling for both worlds!

So, you must have picked up a few bad habits then, I bet you were unaware of the more skillfull aspects of the game? I assume you were taught the Scottish way of playing football i.e. boot the ball as far up the park and make no attempt to play the ball to other players or even to make space for each other?

Pretty please! Pretty pretty please!
And TRUE! I don't know the difference between Scottish or any other style or strategy of football/soccer!

Americans play football (fake rugby) in full body armour without kicking the ball. Men play the English girls game of rounders with padding and protection. Do they wear helmets to play tiddley-winks?

I think i'd like Rounders! I hope they use protective gloves to catch the ball and not try to catch balls without the glove, like in Cricket! US football reminds me of monster trucks with all that equipment! Kinda cool! Guys with shoulder pads look hulky! The male counterpart to girls stuffing their bras!
Rugby is just flirting with life as a cripple! Of course riding a bucking bronco in a Texas rodeo is foolish too! BTW do they have "touch rugby" for girls, like US football does or is it always tackle!

No gloves in rounders for little boys or girls
