I personally feel that if you wish to instill enthusiasm or at least some modest interest for football/soccer in the US and other bastions of low interest for football, you'd let these people comment here! Just my opinion! Why would we want to instill anything in people who have no interest in football? Most of the World is interested in football at the moment, every Country in the World has a league and has a team in the World Cup qualifiers, so what are the football people missing out on? There are people in England who don't like/understand/interested in football, yet we never try to convert them. So, why waste time trying to get someone who thinks the rules of football are messed up because the rules don't allow you to use your hands and counts basketball as a real sport? I couldn't care less if he watches football or not, nor do most of the World to be fair, we are not packing up and going home because some Amnericans are not interested.

More Americans watched the US-England game on TV than watched either the ice hockey or the NBA basketball game.
With the growing number of Hispanics among the American population, I believe that the popularity of the game in the US will continue to grow.
Of course success on the pitch makes a lot of difference. The American women's soccer team have been one of the best in the world for a few years now while the men have got a long way to go before they could be seen in the same like.
On a general point - this IS a discussion board. I don't like muzzling anyone's opinion and as long as they don't cross certain lines pretty much anything goes here.
On the other hand, if people want to talk about the World Cup surely that should basically be about the games, the players, that sort of thing?
A lot of people (especially women - I'm probably much more of a 'sporty' girl than average to be honest) find soccer and indeed MOST sports deeply boring.
That's a point of view as well.
I can't understand the point of a bunch of overweight men dressing up in suits of armour and rushing about the field getting nowhere and basically looking like fat Daleks but I respect the fact that millions of Americans DO consider that sport.
If you took them out of their padding and asked them to play a game of rugby I doubt very much if they'd last five minutes.
Equally, hardly any NFL players are mobile enough to play soccer successfully (except perhaps the quarterbacks.)
They are slow, fat, and look like robots dressed up in tins of corned beef.
It doesn't strike me as a very MANLY game at all.

Spain lost!
Not sure who the favorite are now. Of course one loss means nothing at this stage......

The last time I checked, the purpose of a discussion board was debate and discussion. If you put up a topic here I think it's an invitation for members to give their opinions. Please let me know if I'm wrong about this. you are wrong about that. Hth. dictionary.die.net/hth definition QUOTE: Hth. Hope This Helps. Often used sarcastically.
No this doesn't help! Are you the new admin here? I'm very disappointed with you, June, inviting everyone to comment here with the initial thread title: "Are We Interested in the World Cup?" and then reacting inappropriately to the Nays! This seems to be the first thread with an attempt to segregate posters and their viewpoints! I prefer free speech!

This seems to be the first thread with an attempt to segregate posters and their viewpoints! I prefer free speech! Anna I didn't ask if anyone was interested, I asked if you were excited. Quite different things. If you aren't really excited by football I didn't expect, encourage or want pages of posts running down football. That seems a rather puerile endeavour to me but, each to their own. It is a shame you feel that I have acted inappropriately and I hope you get over that but quite frankly this is a message board not the UN and the thread is a bit of fun. Getting huffy something so totally unimportant is, quite frankly, a bit silly. It's a tiny thread on the huge internet that I started to discuss the world cup. End Of. If you feel so strongly about giving people on here the opportunity to discuss why they don't like football I suggest you do as mentioned earlier and start your own. (and it's 'happy to help' - which I am )

OK June. Since I'm definitely not a World Cup fan (snooze) I'll leave this thread to you and yours.
I was attracted to this thread based on your original title because I find it amazing that soccer has a following. It is such a ho-hum sport.

So Greece, Agentina and Mexico all win today.
I have a soft spot for the Greek team. Never been overly excited by the south american's - too much hype!

Argentina are a lot better than Brazil who looked very ordinary against North Korea.
Mexico are flashy but lack substance.
Spain have flair but lack grit.
Holland could be dark horses.
England - well, you never know WHAT team will turn up wearing that shirt.
On their day they can beat anyone but they can lose to anyone too.
Japan and South Korea have been surprisingly good as well.
I have a feeling that Argentina are now the most likely team to win the World Cup.

England is my first choice to win the Cup. I'm cheering for them all the way. But they are underdogs.

OK June. Since I'm definitely not a World Cup fan (snooze) I'll leave this thread to you and yours. I was attracted to this thread based on your original title because I find it amazing that soccer has a following. It is such a ho-hum sport. Are you a baseball fan, BA? Because it's the same dynamic at work. I think soccer gets such a fanbase because people can play it in their back yards, on the street, even alone against a wall. You can be the poorest of the poor and still join in with it. Brazil is allegedly so good because so many boys have absolutely nothing but they can still play football on the beach or street and do - and so their skills develop to a very high level. The rules are simple and intuitive. The equipment is as cheap as you could wish for. You don't even need to own a ball, truth be told, you can improvise, but footballs are cheap as chips. And of course there are the infamous jumpers for goalposts. It's known as the working-man's game partly because it used to be affordable to watch your local and favourite team play and that accessibility made it popular too. It is, in fact, the everyman (and woman) game. In America, it just happens that baseball fulfills that role so Americans had no need for soccer, just as Europeans had no need for baseball. Just one of those things... like you saying potato and me saying potato....
