Hypocrisy is something i associate with evil hidden plots, two facedness, etc.. Like the Pharisees trying to vilify Christ and fool the masses into believe they were righteous. I wouldn't cheapen the term hypocrisy by applying it to innocent human inconstencies, where good intentions are involved. Few people here would agree with that, Anna. Dictionary definition: Hypocrisy is the act of pretending to have beliefs, opinions, virtues, feelings, qualities, or standards that one does not actually have. Hypocrisy is thus a kind of lie. Hypocrisy may come from a desire to hide from others actual motives or feelings. Hypocrisy is closely related to self-Righteousness. > Maybe there's a language barrier that causes misunderstanding. Hi Beth! I wouldn't associate cigarette smoking with a belief. That's simply an addiction or a behavior pattern that the smoker can't overcome. If he/she sincerly feels it's bad to get involved with smoking and advises other against doing so then she/he is not a hypocrite. If he/she denied being a smoker you'd have this element of concealment and deception, which is typical for hypocrisy. dictionary.reference.com/browse/hypocrisy 1. a pretense of having a virtuous character, moral or religious beliefs or principles, etc., that one does not really possess.
2. a pretense of having some desirable or publicly approved attitude.
3. an act or instance of hypocrisy

Beth - thanks for posting that definition. It narrows our view of what a hypocrite actually is.
Hypocrisy is the act of pretending to have beliefs, opinions, virtues, feelings, qualities, or standards that one does not actually have. Hypocrisy is thus a kind of lie. Hypocrisy may come from a desire to hide from others actual motives or feelings.
So someone who smokes cigarettes but tells someone else they shouldn't is not a hypocrite at all. He or she is not pretending -- just being honest and letting the other person know it's a lousy habit, addictive, and hard to quit.
