Syn posted.;-But do you think that the suicide and substance abuse rates are due to there being something inherent in homosexuality that causes those with this characteristic to gravitate towards these undesirable behaviours? I would have thought it more likely that the explanation is more due to the social pressures and prejudices that homosexuals face, which like the suicide rates, are higher than for heterosexuals.
Toby comments.:- Despite the massive amount of pity that most straight people have for the poor bent people, it seems that it is never enough. Bent folk do have a problem with being what they are and even wealthy bent folk doing their best to mimic straight folk, (like Elton with his little adopted babies), don't seem to be as valid as straight folk. It must be hell being bent, I do sympathise with them and I am damn glad that all of my Children turned out straight as dies. What is the solution for bent folk ? it is hoped that one day a cure will be found, US Scientists have isolated the defective part of the brain that causes bentness, they also reported the same area in the brain when defective, produces religious madness, total commitment to a religion and everything else is unimportant. Surgery could be tried also there is a method of inserting a needle into the area and pumping a few drops of liquid nitrogen to kill the tissue, but this resulted in asexuality which is not a real cure, is it ?
I suppose that the solution would be to establish a Country for Bents and give them all a grant to go live there, they could sustain themselves by engaging in the manufacture of High Fashion, Footwear, Wig Design, Handbag design, Hairdressing and Mincing Schools.
I wonder what the principle occupation is for bents, I never saw any on the rigs in the North Sea. ??

If you want to be pedantic about it, homophobia ought to mean simply fear of the same.
In practice, the OED recognises that for most of us, it means:
'Fear or hatred of homosexuals and homosexuality'.
I'll go with that.

However can you point to any evidence regarding this Hatred of Homosexuals you believe exists on this thread ?

I wonder what the principle occupation is for bents, I never saw any on the rigs in the North Sea. ?? Please Toby, I do feel plenty of frustration that the homosexual life style is being presented in a "happily ever after fairy tale fashion" to children, but lets keep the discussion academic.
I admit I'm hearing "bent" for the first time in this context, but it sounds insulting. I understand in the UK a fag is a cigarette too, but in the US it's also an insult for male homosexuals.
I can understand someone arguing that heteros being called "straight" is the same, but straight has synonyms like direct, forthright, good posture, etc. and "bent" is crooked, warped, etc..

What a delightfully homophobic thread this is turning out to be. Dearest Jean, Again I'll never understand parents, who don't care if their child developes as a heterosexual or a homosexual.
On the other side I don't want to see homosexuals get stuck with a derogatory slang word. That can lead to a dark place.

Toby comments.;- You cannot have it both ways Anna, If Homosexuals can call Heterosexuals 'Straight', then why should Heterosexuals not call Homosexuals,' Bent'.
After all ,'Bent ' is quite simply the opposite of,' Straight'.
Any connotations attached to the word ,'Bent', exist only in peoples minds.
I can give you an example, a Man from Mars comes to England and learns to speak English, he would also use the word ,'Bent', to describe Homosexuals as a straightforward opposite word of ,'Straight', and he would not have any problems with this word because he would not have been indoctrinated with peoples personal opinions.
You saw the comment about somebody complaining that this thread had become Homophobic, that's very lower middle class, ( in my humble opinion ), ! Just by using a word that is simply the opposite of straight !

Toby comments.;- It is a shortened version of Faggott. I have no idea where Faggott originated but if I were asked to hazard a guess, I would say Haight-Ashbury in San Francisco.

So, are you rolling your eyes because you don't believe that two people from the same sex can live happily ever after? That to live happily ever after a man needs a woman, and a woman needs a man? Because my mother felt like that, pressured by society to marry and have kids and she was miserable and guess who paid for it? My sister and I. There was no happily ever after in our heterosexual parent upbringing.

Hi Novak! I certainly do understand the love a parent feels for their child. I'm just saying that I don't understand a parent, who wouldn't use his/her parential influence tip the scales in favor of a heterosexual development for his/her child, if the child is wavering between heterosexuality and homosexuality.

I'm sorry for your difficult childhood. Life is not a fairy tale, but I truly hope you don't regret coming to this world! We have to move forward and stay in the light.

I'm not saying there's hatred or contempt in your heart when you use the word "bent" meaning "homosexual".
Bent is truly more negative than straight. Deviant, defective, crooked may be subjective associations, but I'm sure any survey will confirm that bent is a negative word and straight is positive. I've seen homosexuals calling themselves "queers" too. So yes there are plenty of double standards. I confess to not being a native speaker of UK slang, but for American ears the question: "Are you "bent?" is insulting!
Let's be more diplomatic here!

I don't get why you think sexuality has to be an absolute or defined for life! Who you are attracted to is just that, who you are attracted to. Why do you feel compelled to label or to force your children to out themselves as one or the other? My parents kept out of my sex life - and quite right too!

Why is it only heterosexual couples - in general - fear the need to enforce their sexuality preferences on their offspring? Since I live in Canada, I know many homosexual couples with children, and you know what sexual development preferences those parents preach to their kids? NONE. If their kids are straight, they are happy for them. If their kids are gay, they are happy for them. In the end, you are who you are, and you love whom you love. No amount of parenting can influence that.

For what it's worth I had lesbian relationships in my teens.
To me, as long as it's consenting adults, I'm pretty easy.
