This is so outrageous. The Mexican miltary surrounded and killed the top leader of the Beltran-Leyva drug cartel. One of the marines was killed during the action and he was honored as a national hero. So the drug cartel gang murdered his entire family just to send a message and to instill fear into Mexican police and soldiers who might come after them. Really sucks. Reminds me of Chicago during the time of John Dillinger and Scarface Al Capone. ++++ MEXICO CITY December 22, 2009– Gunmen have killed the family of a Mexican marine who died during a raid that took down powerful drug kingpin Arturo Beltran Leyva. Police say the attack happened shortly before midnight Monday at the home of fallen marine Melquisedet Angulo — just hours after the military honored him as a national hero during a memorial service. A federal government official tells The Associated Press that the dead include Angulo's mother, two siblings and an aunt. An unidentified woman is being treated at a hospital. The family was attacked at their home in the Gulf coast state of Tabasco, where the Beltran Leyva cartel has a strong presence. The official cannot be named under departmental rules. Angulo and Beltran Leyva were both killed during a shootout last week between marines and the cartel. So, is this a hate crime, do you think? or just a vendetta.

If you think about it, Beth, it's a powerful argument against Libertarian beliefs in everybody being as well-armed as the military and those (and police) kept as minimal as possible. This is just what you would expect when Forces of Law & Order have no superiority of force over citizenry - the Middle Ages.

Oh . . . in a way, I suppose.
I agree with the POV that insists criminals and potential criminals will arm themselves illegally, so gun laws really do not affect them very much. Most unfortunate.

They will arm themselves illegally but the availability and quality of illegal arms will be severely curtailed and the price correspondingly high - or should be, if 'the authorities' are doing their job. For some reason, the cost of guns in England has dropped to ridiculous levels. The problem is always that as long as they are easily available somewhere, then they can be smuggled in. There is a suspicion that they are not coming in from the USA or the Caribbean but that the reason so many Northern Irish paramilitary hoards have never been formally decommissioned is that they were sold on, either to raise funds or by individuals on the 'cross-over line' between 'genuine' believers in their cause and crooks making money out of them.

Surely you're not suggesting that anti-gun legislation could reduce the problem of drug gangs in Mexico? These criminals have no shortage of money. Outlawing guns wouldn't slow them down at all. It might reduce the ability of innocent citizens to defend themselves though. The Los Angeles Times has a very interesting series running on the Mexican Drug War. It is an interesting read.
