For the second time (2003, 2009), Johnny Depp has been selected Sexiest Man Alive by People Magazine.

Only because I refused to stand against him. He looks like an Australian accountant.

At first glance I thought it was Trotsky!

What an odd title.
I mean, not many people find corpses sexy; there's a name for those few who do, I think!

Surely by definition a corpse can't be alive?
Now I'd vote for someone quite different from Johnny Depp - maybe we should start our own poll on the subject?

I nominate Alan Rickman though, in truth, Depp would be my second choice.

Surely by definition a corpse can't be alive? Exactly : that's whey the "alive" is a bit suerfluous in the title!

Alive today perhaps? But just for comparison here's a slightly older Trotters (though he did have a beard at one time):

I don't find Depp all that attractive. I like the nerdy kind of guy.

I guess he wasn't bad by the standards at that time. Age is not pretty in most cases. Doesn't look as if he had access to botox, cosmetic surgery or various creams and ointments.

I have seen better young photos and he was certainly 'dapper' in the 1890s. There is a very famous one taken in 1932 when he was 75/76 that I think is the ultimate origin (with a generous helping of Munch's The Scream) of the typical 'small grey alien'. But for Tesla we wouldn't have just about everything electrical that we do have.

Was the first pic you posted Tesla or Trotsky? I think I may have gotten confused.

The first one that isn't in that series was Trotsky. I had a strange picture of him very young but I never put it on Photobucket that I know of, and lost it.

I had to buy the dvd "From Hell" starring Johnny Depp because Gabriel seduced me into all of this jack the ripper speculation. He's a good actor, but awww... I prefer the old film guys like Clint Eastwood, Robert Redford and too bad John Wayne is gone! Let's not have any age discrimination here now!

Anna, I think the reason it says sexiest man ALIVE is to keep the designation current - as opposed to sexiest man EVER. If Depp, or most of the 2009 possibles, went up against Paul Newman or Ryan ONeal or others, I'm sure, who I can't think of at the moment - in their prime - he wouldn't have won. It's all relative. With Depp, I think it has to do with his manner and overall persona as much as physical appearance.

Mmm - so do we have to judge him as he is today, or on how we last remembered him?
I am thinking of going for Sean Connery, but am afraid that someone will pop up with a picture of him taken last week, and make me look a prize twat.

No one would think you're THAT, Skylark!
Sean Connery was dead sexy when he was younger; so was Paul Newman, Kirk Douglas, Michael Douglas, Clark Gable, Ronald Colman, Douglas Fairbanks.
Now, of course, they're either dead or on the road to the coffin!
