The Fog (#9 - NOT the remake) and The Thing (the Kurt Russell version) will always be my favourites. The Others is very good, but once you've seen it, there isn't much rewatchability in it, in my view
There are a number of older films that I very much like too - The Devil Rides Out, The Beast Must Die, Curse of the Werewolf, Curse of the Demon, and a few others

The Shining, number 1 on the list is very disturbing, but it's a psychodrama and no ghost story. I agree with motorist on "The Thing" that was creepy, but it was also Sci-Fi horror and not a ghost story! It's the Sci-Fi horror genre that scares me the most. Ghosts have taken a back seat in the scare ya business! The cult films, Phantasm 1, 2, 3 and Hellraiser 1, 2,3 are scary too and "Jeepers Creepers" really creeped me out!

Ghosts have taken a back seat in the scare ya business! This is very true. I was a pre-teen when I first saw ALIEN on the telly, and films just haven't been that scary since. Even rewatching it is no good Hellraiser 4 would have been a nice end to the series. Set in the future, it adds a bit more story, and the origin of the box (though it doesn't explain where the OTHER boxes came from) Hellraiser 5 is very good, is more of the "mindfuck" variety, and most slashy stuff is off-screen. It's more about anticipated horror and unexpected twists Hellraiser 6 - they tried to emulate the style of 5, but I don't think they quite succeeded. A take it or leave it film. I haven't seen 7 yet, as I haven't found it on region 2

I prefer sweeter seasonal films. It's tradition in the TrubHouse to watch Nightmare before Christmas about now, not just halloweeny but also puts you into a Christmas Shopping spirit. And we've just watched Ghost Town starring Ricky Gervais. Not much to write home about exactly but sweet with a little edge -without the saccharin - amusing and giggly, more smiley than guffaw but smiley is good. It might become a tradition too.

Anna, I wouldn't risk good money betting on it, but I think The Shining is a novel/movie about the super-natural. Obviously, Jack Torrence is not playing with a full deck from the first. Because of his weaknesses and instability, he's vulnerable to the haunting that's going on in the Overlook. Danny (the son) is totally aware because he has a gift of second sight (the shining), ditto the manger who welcomes them and then leaves. The wife is not unstable OR super sensitive, so she is not affected - except, of course, by way of the changes in her husband and son.
IMO, a very scary book and film. brrrrrrrr IMO, as often is the case, the book is better than the movie. The movie is great, too, though.
Trubble, we like Nightmare Before Christmas, too. Also Halloween Town and some of the other juvenile, seasonal movies that are a little scary for the kids but not enough to give them actual nightmares. Our daughter (now 14) especially likes Beetlejuice and Drop Dead Fred.

I actually don't remember anything supernatural. The husband's descent into insanity and his ax attack were disturbing creepy! I prefer films where a monster from outer space attacks.. Motorist reminded me of 'Alien', which really scared me, but didn't upset me like Shining did where a trusted father turns evil. I would put Shining in the genre with "Psycho", "Fatal Attraction", etc.

I see where you're coming from, but there was more to it than that. Even the title refers to the ability to tune in to the haunting and the ghosts. Try reading the book and you'll see right away, I think. I agree with you that alien monsters are easier to deal with than evil humans. p.s. I like the Evil Dead movies quite a lot.

I think the movie "The Shining" scared me off enough. Maybe you're right about a haunting element causing the insanity, like in the "Amityville Horror" films. Here we also have the father gradually sucumbing to an evil influence that wants him to murder his wife and child with an ax. I'll stick to the full fledged sci-fi monsters, who aren't interested in whether or not we betray our loved ones!

I confess to having a big weakness for Sci-Fi junk films, like this one "Godzilla vs Hedorah". ;D If you can find that part of you that's 7 years old or younger you'll be awe struck and impressed by the YouTube video! If not i apologize in advance!

Godzilla died but his son took over the role I absolutely refuse to call the son Godzooki

A little while back (summer, I think), gg added the fancast link to the Carl Sagan thread in this topic. I was browsing there the other day and saw quite a few "B" horror movies available for easy access. www.fancast.com There's also a Halloween section with lots of goodies - and a few baddies. This link should take you directly in. Carnival of Souls (previously discussed somewhere in Culture Vultures) is there. www.fancast.com/specials/halloween If, by any chance, this site is not available out of the U.S., please let me know.

It's very instructive in teaching children to protect the environment and not let garbage pile up! Only Godzilla has a chance against the Smog Monster, which can emerge from pollution! ;D 2nd place is tie! Little boys like "Godzilla vs MechaGodzilla" and little girls prefer "Godzilla vs Mothra"! Yeah and "Son of Godzilla" is OK, but non-Japanese Godzilla purists will never accept Godzooki!
