This week, my two favourite boards have both closed down. One was Crime Debate which we've already had a few posts about but I'm going to pay a tribute to the Orchard. Just as CD was the best crime-focused board I knew so too was the Orchard the best general board. Chris, the owner, was a man I always liked dearly even though not all of his members shared my high opinion of him. He was at times temperamental but he also did his best and tried to be fair-minded and he made the board a fascinating mix of almost everything. I'll miss the football prediction league thread - I'd set it up here if I knew how to do it!- and just in general the whole feel of the board. Were there difficult people on the Orchard? Yes, but only a small number. Chris was amazing with graphics and anyone who put up with the ignorant abuse he sometimes took from some of his own members deserves a halo. He told me, not long before he set off on a long holiday, after which he came back and it was obvious that his heart was no longer in the business of running the Orchard, that he loved me. I was stunned as well as deeply touched and didn't reply to him. I hope he wasn't offended but I'm a happily married woman and so I wasn't sure how to tell him that without giving offence. Fortunately he found love on his travels and I hope she makes him very happy. I am honoured that Alpha Hooligan, my administrator, Riotgrrl, one of my global moderators, and Trubble, one of my mods, have all come to this board from the Orchard, along with around half of my members. About a third of my members came from CD, about half from the Orchard, and the rest either from unknown means or a few of the other boards I belong to. Rest in peace, Mortal Orchard! Vale et salve! (Mike gave me that last bit! It was a wonderful board and I'm sad it's gone but I wish Chris nothing but good luck in the rest of his life.

The magicool jukebox (tm) has spun it's last disc in the MO. Chris is a mixed up bloke, he needs to "find himself" he swerves from being dead cheerfull to deeply unhappy from day to day. There is a top bloke with a nicely warped sense of humour underneath all that mixedupness. AH

It's been my experience that many forum site owners and admins are slightly whacked. Don't know whether this activity attracts that kind of personality or causes it. Linda, you're exceptionally stable. Don't let it get ya.

Oh, Beth, if you only knew!
I'm so mixed-up it's unbelievable.
I always liked Chris very much and maybe in another life we might have hit it off as an item.
As it is - well, like I said, I'm happily married.
Stable - God, I'm an emotional volcano, Beth!
(That's self-control you see from me on here - you should have seen me when I used to belong to Worralorra!)

i liked chris, although we agreed on very little. i do think it's a travesty that he let the board go. alpha and riotgirl ran it quite well while he was gone. chris should have just left it alone until he was ready to resume

I registered at Mortal Orchard quite a while back. It was a very British forum. At first glance i thought all the football talk there was about US football. I would have looked pretty silly posting about the Green Bay Packers. ;D
I forgot my password there and got caught up with a lot of offline stuff and never got around to logging in again. Too bad for all those who put their hearts into that forum to have the plug pulled on them.

You were registered on the Orchard as 'Anna.' We once exchanged PMs!
It was largely a British board though a couple of Americans also belonged.
Jumbo, of course, contributed well to it.

If you want to try a VERY British board, Stub Crouch is the one. It's a bit like a comfortable slipper really. Very fluffy.
