Interesting. I'd have thought Washington D.C. would have come in first, them Detroit, then L.A., etc..
Our nearest city (Louisville) isn't even on the list, but our next nearest (Cincinnati) is 19th. We get their daily newspaper and my daughter lives not far from there. I'm not picking up on this stress. I'm sure Forbes has a set of guidelines, but for some reason they are not (so far) affecting my family and friends.

Oh, I see. This is all to do with employment.

Oh, I see. This is all to do with employment. Hi Beth! Unemployment Rate is just one of the factors. The following factors also played a role in the Forbes study! Median Home Price Drop, Cost Of Living, Air Quality, Sunny Days and Per Year Population Density

I suppose we should feel fortunate we live between a low-stress city and another that's only middling bad. Why did you think it followed that Chicago would be number one?

I guess they just calculated the given factors in some mathematical scheme. I would have thought New York was more stressy. With all the sunlight and Palm Trees in LA it's hard to see the stress there too. Maybe they should have added in other factors such as mental instution patients and the number of psychiatrists and psychologists per 10,000 inhabitants. Then i'm sure New York would be Stressville Nr. 1!

I think hot and sunny - almost every day has to be more stressful than changing seasons. The dog days of summer always seem to bring on more crime. Then, in L.A. there are the gangs and the relentless freeways. I used to think I'd love living in one of the major cities, but have since decided to appreciate the fact that I don't.

I live on the corrider between San Francisco and Sacramento; it is stressful here in many ways....

I found Venice Beach, which belongs to LA very fun and relaxing!

I found Venice Beach, which belongs to LA very fun and relaxing! Yes, I agree, Anna, but I've never tried to live there so don't know how that would go. Have you? Did you love it? My sister lives near Venice Beach! I visited her several times there. It's good to avoid the highways at certain times. The suburbs Compton, Watts and to a lesser extent downtown LA are also avoided, if possible. The university is in a precarious neighborhood too. I liked the beaches, skipped Hollywood, where my sister had a couple side roles. I would say LA is much less stressy, if you're in the right neighborhood! But always use an extra dose of skin care creme because of the dry climate there.

Anna, I've visited Venice Beach exactly twice, and the last time was 12 years ago, so I don't know all that much about it (or its stress factors), but I had fun there and have good rememberings. L.A. metro area is another story. Long Beach used to be good - don't know about now - and a few other places, but overall I wouldn't move there. I have family in San Bernardino who love it but think most of So Cal is high stress with state budget issues, threats of wild fires and earthquakes, traffic frustrations, etc.. Which areas in Europe do you find to be high or low stress?

Which areas in Europe do you find to be high or low stress? My sister says Long Beach is rather risky, but the die hard surfers go there. I really don't think of economical factors, which i can avoid or don't affect me personally. If the city is expensive i minimize shopping. As far as Europe goes i find Berlin, Amsterdam ( drug capital ) and maybe London stressy. Since i'm high strung and speak French the Parisiens like me, unlike most foreigners, so personally Paris is quite OK for me, but stress for others. Munich, Avignon, Malaga, Dublin ( avoid the Sheriff Street area though ) etc. are low on the stress scale. Just my opinion and maybe my impressions would change. Of course large cities are always more stressy than rural areas and lonely beaches!

I thought Dallas would have been higher on the list.

I thought Dallas would have been higher on the list. Perhaps the number of sunny days, which Forbes calculates, lowered the stress factor in their view!
