Yesterday, UK (U of KY) played their opening game against Miami of Ohio. Several of our friends attended - it got a lot of advance publicity because it was played on the Bengals field in Cincinnati. The idea (obviously) was to get the Wildcats off to a good start for the season. We chose not to go because we knew what would happen - and happen it did. UK trounced Miami, 42 - 0. I should add, UK is a large university, Miami of Ohio is a much smaller college with the main focus on academics. Why would M of O agree to this unbalanced competition? I still have not figured that out. I do not see the honor in that kind of defeat.

I still have not figured that out. I do not see the honor in that kind of defeat. sure you know why! it's called MONEY- It's green- it spends- Why do you think Florida International or Chatanooga agreed to play alabama this year? One of these two is a 76 point underdog in vegas. Why play and get all your players beat up? because alabama promised the other team 450,000 dollars as their share of the tv revenues. this happens to be the amount of money the team need to build a practice facility on their campus. They would be forever trying to raise the funds by donations. They aren't even on the map. So they sacrifice their players for the good of the many. Little teams try to play big teams to be on tv. But if the little team is pretty good, the big teams won't schedule them for fear of getting beat, dropping in the polls, and missing out on a higher more lucrative tv bowl. Here's how it works- USC is playing ohio state next week- Let's say the tv revenue is 4 million dollars for that game(it's probably higher) USC has to split their 2 million equally with all the the teams in the Pac 10 Ohio State has to share their 2 million equally with all the teams in the Big 10 now you know why all the teams schedule weak teams so they can get 7 wins which is what it takes to get bowl eligible and make the big tv money for their conference. Then you have the hogs like Notre Dame. When they play USC, they don't have to share their 2 million with anybody. They aren't in a conference. They keep it all- every week Like I always tell you when you have a question about anything- follow the MONEY-

Thanks gg. My brother explained this to me in much the same way not long after I'd posted. That is so disheartening. One expects the pro teams to be big business, but those of us who are a little naive and sentimental about old school ties hate to look at college athletics that way. I'm adding a few cynical brain cells this week - all the way around.

I don't know whether to laugh or cry. Miami of Ohio played Boise state this weekend and lost . . . . . . 48-zip Is this a pattern for the season or are they really setting their boys up for their first few games with obviously much tougher teams, just to get a share of some big gates? Bears watching. The games we watched USC 18 Ohio State 15 (disappointed but not too surprised - both played a good game) Missouri State 3 U of Cincinnati - freakin' 70 !!!! Vanderbilt 9 LSU 23 (I'm sure gg is proud - I was a little disappointed) Notre Dame 34 Michigan 38 More scores Here

(GG.....don't need any of your input on them either) it's too late hon. i have disliked usc for forty years. with the exception of the three years of pat hayden and jk mckay, usc has always been a one man team, mike garrett, oj simpson, anthony davis, charley white, etc, etc, etc. besides, although i was raised in southern california, i was born in oregon, and the reservation is in washington.

Illinois (1-2) . . . . 0 Ohio State (3-1 . . . 30 13th Florida #1 (4-0). . . . 41 Kentucky (2-1) Ouch! . . . . . 7

Florida, Texas and Alabama are the ones to beat. duh

We have friends there who would be terribly disappointed if they thought we weren't cheering their boys on.

Did you see the news story of the USC player that was bench pressing and the bar slipped and it crushed his throat? Had seven hours of surgery but should fully recover.

Even feeling a bit sympathetic toward Alabama, of course I was hoping the wildcats would prevail yesterday. My brother, husband and sil drove to the game valiantly hoping for the best. Nobody's really complaining - 'bama played a good game, we did not. Score, 38-20 _________________ Otherwise 10th Cincinnati (5-0) over the downtrodden Miami of Ohio (0 - 5) 27 to 13 9th Ohio State (4-1) over Indiana (3-2) 33 to 14 more here

Had seven hours of surgery but should fully recover. they had a story on it on espn gameday saturday morning. the moral is to not bite off more than you can chew, or in other words, don't let your alligator mouth overload your parakeet azz. maybe the chap will be able to play next year. he can do a redshirt trip or something

For the past couple of weeks, I've been taking a break, concentrating on Pro games and the Bengals. But, this past Saturday cried out for attention. Louisville (2-5) 5th ranked Cincinnati (7-0) I live between these cities and have fond connections to both schools. And, y'know, I knew who would win but hoped it would be a hard-hitting contest, anyway. Alas - Louisville 10, Cincinnati 41 was a disappointment. Glad that one's over so we can concentrate on Cin. Yes, Jim, Wildcats football is usually less than fans would like it to be. Great tailgate parties, though.

U of Cincinnati is still ranked 5th while working their way up to 13 - 0. They squeaked by Pittsburgh yesterday 44-45.
