March 12, 2018: President Donald Trump suggested drug dealers in the United States should face harsher punishments, such as the death penalty or life in prison, during a campaign rally for congressional candidate Rick Saccone in Pennsylvania on Saturday.
“I think it’s a discussion we have to start thinking about,” Trump said during the rally in Moon Township. “I don’t know if we’re ready. I don’t know if this country’s ready for it.” Trump praised Singapore and China for their “zero tolerance policy” when it comes to drugs, and floated the idea for the U.S.
“That means if we catch a drug dealer, death penalty,” Trump said of Singapore, recalling a conversation he had with the country’s president. “And they don’t have a problem.”
=== What a great idea. Capture and bump off drug dealers. That should slow the drug trade and create a major economic crisis for the drug cartels.

But executing people who haven't killed anyone - I draw the line at that. And frankly I think you'll find that - even in America - a lot of juries will be reluctant to convict a drug dealer if they think it's going to result in a death sentence.

Trump would be better off having a discussion about legalising drugs. That would put the drug barons out of business and also mean that at least the junkies would be getting stuff that was quality controlled and safer than the stuff they do on the street.
But of course he's an authoritarian; the idea of taking a LIBERTARIAN viewpoint on the issue would never occur to him.

We already have too many spaced out druggies. We don't need any more. I really applaud Trump for suggesting that drug dealers should get the DP. Good riddance to bad rubbish. However, before we do that, we need to reform the death penalty so that well deserving criminals can be executed no more than one year after arrest

We have a program here in Australia where drug addicts can inject themselves safely whilst perhaps trying to lose the habit. There were too many young addicts dying.

I'm all for the Death Penalty when a person commit's premeditated murder, or kills someone driving drunk.. Now the argument could be made that a drug dealer who deals to someone who od's had a hand in that death. For me that is stretching it a bit far.

I think at the very least that drug dealers are accessories to murder.

I think at the very least that drug dealers are accessories to murder. Well, leaving aside the fact that there are drugs and drugs, on the same analogy you could call the NRA (or even all gun owners) accessories to murder. Legalisation is the only RATIONAL answer to the drug problem. You'd have thought a nation that went through the horrors of Prohibition would have worked that out by now!

The article is talking about drug dealers which generally indicates illegal drugs. While guns are legal, guns can be traced back by the bullet, so not all gun owners are responsible for a murder and as the article mentioned, the death penalty is often already sought for those that murder by gun. If drug dealers were held accountable in the same manner, it just might act as a deterrent. Maybe, the greed for money is strong. The point of the article is reduce the number of deaths due to illegal drugs and in some cases legal ones. Alcohol is legal, but that doesn't stop people from driving drunk and dying or killing others, so RATIONALLY it figures that legalizing illegal drugs isn't going to solve overdose deaths either, just make it easier for addicts to get the drugs.

If you're interested in reducing crime, you'd be in favour of legalising drugs. Most crime is drug-related. Every time police officers in the UK have trialled allowing drugs in certain areas the crime rate has gone DOWN dramatically. Every time police officers have been put in charge of exhaustive investigations into 'cracking down on drugs' they've ended up concluding - after a few YEARS of investigation - that LEGALISING drugs is the ONLY rational answer. Now as for guns frankly it's dishonest to pretend you can trace back the 'source' of a killing. Someone might have their gun stolen; they might have sold it; and so on and so on. When I used to be a legal gun owner in the UK I kept my gun safe and secure. A lot of American owners are clearly less responsible than I was. The amount of times that children and even toddlers have been able to gain access to guns is frightening. Now there are FAR more deaths from guns in the US than there are from drugs. And probably most of those (as they are in Britain) are drug-related. So a policy of banning drugs is PR0-CRIMINAL and anti-victim. American conservatives really do need to face up to the fact that they are - consciously or unconsciously - BETRAYING their country by supporting laws that will only make things WORSE. Think logically; if a drug dealer is going to be executed he is just going to kill MORE people. So the policy will actually INCREASE the murder rate. I've often wondered why US conservatives are so consistently pro-criminal in their attitudes.

Executing Drug Dealers won't reduce crime, someone will simply replace them. Not everything President Trump comes up with is a good idea. LOL.. Somethings are... Drug dealers... if they kill someone then they should face the Death Penalty.. but you need to be able to prove they did. Drug dealers and Gun Dealers are like cockroaches.. there is always another one in the shadows waiting.
