I'll never understand why countries or anyone feel they have the right to control one's beliefs?!

Saudi Arabia seems to have a dual personality. The Royal Family gently prods the country into the modern world and makes accommodation with the west. In many ways, they run the country like a huge business. Their nationalized energy and chemicals businesses, including Aramco and Sabic, are where they focus much of their attention. They also control the military and security. The extremist Wahabbi Islamic clerics administer the religious Sharia courts. Observing them is much like time travel going back to the seventh century. The only reason Saudi Arabia exists as a country, rather than a collection of tribes, is that King Fahd reached an accommodation with the Wahabbi clerics that enabled him to form a country. The two would appear to be incompatible, but they've coexisted for so long that they somehow manage to keep it going.

Religion doesn't belong in government. Our world would be so much better off if all religions could be outlawed and eliminated. They're all bogus and do more harm than good

Perhaps US Presidents could make a start by removing the religious part of the ceremony when they are sworn in.
