Personally speaking, no. But its not just a case of legality. In a normally distributed population we find Fisher's principle applies. Suppose male births are less common than female. A newborn male then has better mating prospects than a newborn female, and therefore can expect to have more offspring. Therefore parents genetically disposed to produce males tend to have more than average numbers of grandchildren born to them. Therefore the genes for male-producing tendencies spread, and male births become more common. As the 1:1 sex ratio is approached, the advantage associated with producing males dies away. The same reasoning holds if females are substituted for males through-out. Therefore 1:1 is the equilibrium ratio. Allowing parents to preselect can and may well upset the natural balance, Steinberg should know better, but then there's money to be made.

It's the nightmare of any child to have parents, who wished that their child was born as a member of the other sex. Maybe letting parents have their child with the prefered gender is the "lesser of the evils".

It wouldn't matter if we weren't so daft about expecting each sex to be restricted to stereotyped behavior, particularly male.

I'm guessing that most of the parents seeking this treatment come from cultures where the male (and his wife) is expected to care for his parents in their old age - and possibly also their unmarried sisters.
A pregnant Bangladeshi woman I once knew had six daughters all under 10. Someone told me that her seventh was a boy, but whether she and her husband carried on breeding after that is unknown.

Maybe letting parents have their child with the prefered gender is the "lesser of the evils". Then there's something wrong with the parents. While they may not get what they hoped for, that shouldn't change a thing.

I'm not sure about this. On the one hand I'm not keen on the artificial method of choosing a baby's sex, but on the other hand maybe it would cut down the world's population, especially in third world countries where male babies are prized. Given the choice those people would always opt for a baby boy. In one generation you'd see a difference! Or am I being too simplistic?

Boys, as you know everso, will need girls I think everso has an interesting point! Think of countries like India, where baby girls are often murdered at birth because they are an economical liability in that barbaric tradition there! Maybe a surplus of males will lead to more single bachelor lives and and an end to the genocide committed on female children.
