Big Lin recently posted this interesting thread. My mother's maiden name is associated with the Norman invaders of Ireland. Either this was a Norman branch that didn't intermarry with other Norman tribes and became identified with the Irish, the test doesn't distinguish Norman ethniticy or a number of other explanations including doubting the tests accuracy are possible. MY Mother QUOTE: Had my DNA done,93% Irish, 2% Britsh, 2% spanish, 1% north Russian, 1% western Europe, less than 1% Scandianvian, no trace of Jewish. UNQUOTE: We all believed that my mother was 12% English because a Great great great grandmother married an English citizen, who obligingly converted from Presbyterianism to Catholicism to make the marriage possible.

Some Normans intermarried with the native inhabitants; some (especially the aristocracy) didn't do that or at least not to the same degree as the 'camp followers.'
Of course the Normans were primarily Scandinavian with an admixture of French and (after the conquest of England), Anglo-Saxon, Welsh and Scottish.

Hi Big LIn, My Mother's maiden name was Tait, she was born in Cruden Bay Scotland, then came to Aberdeen and married my Father Tarvit Robertson. I was second youngest of a family of seven. I was wondering if the name Tait was derived from the French name Tati. As that is what we call a spud (tattie) and thought the letter i was moved so the name could be pronounced differently?

Hi Anna, where do you get the test done? My mother had it done. It costs about $70- and you mail a saliva sample in a vial to the researchers. I'll ask my mother for the address + will post it here when I get it. Scottish Lassie
