Law enforcement sources have identified the shooter, who was wielding an assault rifle and a handgun, as US citizen Omar Mateen, from Port St. Lucie in Florida. The gunman, who was born to Afghan parents, was carrying a suspicious device, possibly a suicide vest, when he opened fire on the dance floor inside Pulse in the early hours of this morning. Orlando Police Chief John Mina said authorities have not determined the exact number of people killed, but that 'approximately 20' have died. Another 42 people were taken to hospital. An FBI spokesman said the mass shooting is being investigated as an act of terrorism, adding that they are looking into whether this was an act of domestic or international terror, and if the shooter was a lone wolf. Police said the gunman, who was shot dead by officers, was believed to be in his 20s, while the FBI believe he may have 'leanings to radical Islamic terrorism'. The killings took place less than four miles from where The Voice singer and YouTube star Christina Grimmie, 22, was shot dead at The Plaza Live in Orlando on Friday. Writing on Facebook, Pulse, which described itself as the most prominent gay club in Orlando, urged party-goers to 'get out and keep running' as bullets started flying at around 2am local time. Mina said the suspect exchanged gunfire with an officer working at the club around 2am, then went back inside and took hostages among more than 300 people inside. At around 5am authorities sent in a SWAT team to rescue the hostages. Nine police officers used an explosive device to distract the hostage taker and rescue around 30 people. During the gunfire, an officer was shot, but he was saved by his helmet, and the gunman was killed. It was thought that at least one hostage had been locked in a bathroom with gunshot wounds. At around 6am local time police tweeted: 'Pulse Shooting: The shooter inside the club is dead.' Twitter accounts which claim to be affiliated to the Islamic State have hailed the shooting, although DailyMail.com cannot confirm whether the terror group was behind the attack. Jon Alamo said he was inside the club, which was hosting a Latin-themed night, when a man holding a weapon entered the room he was in. 'I heard 20, 40, 50 shots,' Alamo said. 'The music stopped.' Club-goer Rob Rick said it happened just before closing time. 'Everybody was drinking their last sip,' he said. He estimated more than 100 people were still inside when he heard shots, got on the ground and crawled toward a DJ booth. A bouncer knocked down a partition between the club area and an area in the back where only workers are allowed. People inside were able to then escape through the back of the club. Christopher Hansen said he was in the VIP lounge when he started hearing gunshots. 'I was thinking, are you kidding me? So I just dropped down. I just said please, please, please, I want to make it out,' he said. 'And when I did, I saw people shot. I saw blood. You hope and pray you don't get shot.' He continued to hear shooting even after he emerged, where police were telling people to back away from the club. He saw injured people being tended to across the street. Mina Justice was outside the club trying to contact her 30-year-old son Eddie, who texted her when the shooting happened and asked her to call police. He told her he ran into a bathroom with others to hide. He then texted her: 'He's coming.' She said: 'The next text said: "He has us, and he's in here with us". That was the last conversation.' Ricardo Almodovar, who was inside the nightclub, said: 'Shooter opened fire at around 2.00am. People on the dance floor and bar got down on the floor and some of us who were near the bar and back exit managed to go out through the outdoor area and just ran.' Juan Rivera said on Twitter: 'I am safely home and hoping everyone gets home safely as well. Never seen so many dead bodies on the floor, God is good that my friends and I didn't get shot'. Rosie Feba was in the club with her girlfriend and described the moment the shooting happened. She told the Orlando Sentinel: 'Everyone was getting on the floor. I told her [girlfriend] I didn't think it was real, I thought it was just part of the music, until I saw fire coming out of his gun.' The police department posted on their official Twitter account: 'Multiple injuries. Stay away from the area.' Dozens of officers and medics are at the scene, including Orlando Fire Department's bomb squad and hazardous material team. The attack at the gay club during Pride Month, a LGBT celebration. Florida Governor Rick Scott wrote on Twitter: 'My prayers are with the victims’ families & all those affected by the shooting in Orlando. We will devote every resource available to assist.' @menantol DAS (formerly BushAdmirer) iamjumbo

Some will blame Islam Some will blame terorist groups like Al Queda and ISIL Some will blame the NRA Some will blame the gay lifestyle saying they brought this on themselves Some will blame the club owner citing lax security Some may blame the city of Orlando for permitting a club like this to open there Some will blame poor mental health treatment Some are likely to blame Donald Trump
Seems like I'm forgetting something.
Oh, and I suppose, a few might even blame the shooter himself

Geez, more than 50 now dead. This is the worst single shooter terrorist event in American history.
President Obama refuses to call it what it is: Islamist Terrorism. He didn't mention Islam in his speech.
Pathetic.

Well, what's interesting is that the FBI knew about this guy and investigated him three times but didn't proceed or even keep him under surveillance.
And of course the President - like all the law enforcement people I saw talking on TV - said it was too early to jump to conclusions.
But of course to those who have inborn prejudices any excuse for bigotry will do.

What irritated me with this guys speech is that he used the phrase "Respect the victims" encouraging politicans ( and us ) not to react to this tragedy. I say lets start deporting the immigrants who correspond to the killer's profile. Let the Arab/Muslim/Mideastern countries sort this madness out. It's their heritage not ours! It doesn't belong in Western civilisation and we must stop playing Russian roulette with our citizens in the name of tolerance and political correctness.

What's irritating me, Anna, is the deliberate dishonesty and the obsessional Islamophobia.
People are always complaining that not enough Muslims condemn this sort of thing; when they do the mealy-mouthed merchants of hate always find excuses to justify their own prejudices.
We must stop paying homage to ANY kind of prejudice whether it's for or against Muslims.
Prejudice is just WRONG as well as being stupid.
As for your objection to the phrase 'respect the victims' all I can say is that's what HUMAN beings do.
Compassion is part of what MAKES us human; human and humane are from the same word.
So what he said is perfectly fair and compassionate and human.
I'm getting rather tired of people trying to demonize Islam; just as I'm getting tired of people trying to demonize me for being some kind of racist or Islamophobe.
The trouble with being a liberal is you get conservatives thinking you're radical, radicals thinking you're counterrevolutionary and everyone thinking you're a fink.
Even my liberalism has its limits.
I'm on the verge of moving several threads to Vendetta.
So be warned.
This nonsense has to stop.
Opinion is fine; prejudice is not.
Be warned.

And of course the President - like all the law enforcement people I saw talking on TV - said it was too early to jump to conclusions. But of course to those who have inborn prejudices any excuse for bigotry will do. Lin - Common sense is not prejudice. That Islam is a breeding ground for terror is painfully obvious to all but the most prejudiced. You can't defend the indefensible. Please don't require me to pretend that Islam isn't the incubator for an incredible horrific terrorist attacks worldwide. It is clearly the incubator. Denial of the facts, in order to support a liberal point of view, isn't a good thing. Censorship is a much much worse thing. Islamophobia is a made up term that only exists in the liberal playbook to demonize reality and support a preconceived and false viewpoint. When Islam deserves my respect, I will respect it. However, I don't see how a fantasy created by a sadistic pedophile that has caused so much misery worldwide for many centuries deserves any respect. Deny the facts and call that Islamophobia if you want. However, the facts should outweigh opinions and the facts are on my side here, big time. I strongly agree with Donald Trump who has condemned President Obama and Hillary Clinton for their refusal to use the term 'Radical Islam' when discussing the horrific Orlando terrorist attack. I just hate political correctness because it is so entirely dishonest. And how about Bernie Sanders who blamed our gun laws for the tragedy instead of blaming Islam and the shooter. What a fool! Are most Muslims peace loving? Sure they are. Isn't it true that most Muslims are not terrorists? Yes that is true. So should we condemn Islam because of the acts of a few crazies who claim they're acting in the interests of Islam? The answer to that question is yes. Refer to www.thereligionofpeace.com for statistical proof and tabulation of the facts which are overwhelming. We have to be realistic here and that means acknowledging the fact that so many attacks are by Muslims. If Islam doesn't exist, none of this happens. So long as the Quran is said to be the word of Allah, and so long as the Quran says what it says, some Muslims are going to carry out such acts. Islam inspires these acts. It doesn't inspire all Muslims, just some Muslims, and that is not acceptable. They're getting their message from the Quran and that message is being reinforced and justified by Islamic governments. Islam treats homosexuality as a crime. In its 1991 Constitution, Iran adopted the extreme punishment of execution for sodomy. Articles 108-113 say: Sodomy is a crime, for which both partners are punished. The punishment is death if the participants are adults, of sound mind and consenting; the method of execution is for the Shari'a judge to decide. On April 7, 2005, it was reported that Saudi Arabia sentenced more than 100 men to prison or flogging for "gay conduct." Execution, flogging, and toppling a wall on homosexuals come from the reliable hadith and later legal rulings in Islam. They sit at its core. Execution and flogging may also come from the Quran itself.

Us Brits had to put up with the IRA and UDA for years; in Spain there's been ETA; and so on. The US had it soft and they can't believe that anyone would dare to attack Uncle Sam. Pure vanity! Gosh Big Lin, all I was doing was providing the latest update. If you aren’t with interested I don’t know what to tell you. However, let me suggest that a little more history of the United States might help put things in perspective. Not enough experience with terrorism? What an interesting piece of mistaken belief. Let’s see now, as a nation of immigrants the people who live here are related to people all over the world and many came here because they could no longer live under the terrorism of the places they lived before. Those ‘family’ experiences can go back more than a few generations but most families have passed those stories down to those living today. A lot of people here are connected by blood to those who came from slaves, others came here as indentured servants. A sizeable portion are blood related to one or another of the American Indian tribes. I’m sure that will not mean much to you, but you may remember that we had a pretty good sized war among ourselves during the 1860s. Some six hundred and sixty thousand men died in that war, but more than that was the intentional terrorism. When Sherman made his march to the sea (Savana) he had discussed beforehand with Lincoln and Grant that to bring the war to an end the spirit of the Southern people had to be broke. He did that on that march and since the men were away fighting, it was directed at the women and the children. Going through Georgia they followed the railroad and guess what that went across my family’s land. When my father was young they could still dig Minnie balls out of the walls of the house. It intended to, and did, lay waste to the land and this was in the time of my great grandparents and their parents. Not only that but they took some of the civilians away to the Northern States and most never came home again. Reconstruction wasn’t some nice holding of hands and rebuilding of the south. It was military occupation that was brutal. Elected representatives were thrown out of their seats and replaced with former slaves at the point of a gun. Food and crops and domestic animals were taken from whites and given to former slaves. There was a lot more, but that was only in the South. Even today they are still destroying parts of the old South such as statues in parks because of political correctness. Other parts of the country also suffered under military occupation such as the Shays and Whisky rebellions (against new heavy taxes) in the North East and they were put down by troops. Or before the Revolution during the French and Indian Wars where entire families were wiped out in a single night. Of course the American Indians suffered and were placed on reservations and Japanese citizens were placed in camps during World War II and before that Germans during World War I. All are now part of our citizens with lots of intermarriage. None of this counts the numbers of our citizens lost fighting wars for Europeans. Nor does it count the number of people we accepted from England, Scotland, Wales, Cornwall, Ireland, Europe, Spain, Eastern Europe, Russia, all over Asia, and because they were chased out (including Gypsies by the way) as not wanted. Nor does it count the number of riots such as the Irish riots in New York during the first part of the Civil War, or the more modern riots. Even I was in the one in 1967 in Detroit, and relatives were in the Detroit 1943 riot. I suspect that there were more killed in those 2 riots than in the events you mentioned. Certainly if the other riots were added in they would far exceed those events. So the United States has had it soft. Maybe so, maybe not. But I wonder, what you folks would do if we really closed our borders and left the bunch of you fighting among yourselves. You can’t even take a comment up dating current events without taking it the wrong way. I realize that you don’t believe it, but we (the West) have been at war with Islam for 1,400 years and yes, both sides have done stupid things, but the West actually accepts immigrants from that cesspool of the Mideast and Africa. They of the Mideast and Africa sure don’t accept immigrants (except Israel) and they treat many of their own citizens like animals. You want them, please take them and welcome. Of course they have you over a barrel because you need the energy they have. Thankfully we don’t need it. We can not only supply ourselves but could also supply Europe and do so for 400 years just on known reserves. There will be in my opinion a major war coming to all of us within the next 15 years. It will be between Islam and the West. Wait until Iran gets not only their nuclear weapons but also completes the delivery rockets. You may think you are safe and only Israel will be hit. But keep in mind, you are not Islamic, you are kafir and those rockets will be able to reach not only Europe proper but England. What an interesting world we’ll have then. Especially since those of us in the Americas can stay out of it and simply watch the fire works.

Imam Speaking in Orlando Said Gays Must Be Killed Out of 'Compassion'By Patrick Poole June 12, 2016 There is new information on the horrific terror attack in Orlando last night that has killed at least 50 and wounded more than 100 in the largest mass shooting in American history. Sources are telling the Daily Beast that suspected killer Omar Mateen had previously been investigated by the FBI in 2013 and 2014, making this yet another "known wolf" terror attack: Omar Mateen of Port Saint Lucie, Florida, came to the attention of federal authorities twice prior to being identified as the gunman in the Orlando nightclub mass shooting, a senior law enforcement source told The Daily Beast. The senior law enforcement source reports that Mateen became a person of interest in 2013 and again in 2014. The Federal Bureau of Investigation at one point opened an investigation into Mateen but subsequently closed the case when it produced nothing that appeared to warrant further investigation. “He’s a known quantity,” the source said. “He’s been on the radar before.” Mateen was a U.S. citizen; his parents are from Afghanistan, CBS News reports. Until then, I will see it for what it is -- a hateful and despicable cult and a breeding ground for terrorists. What some of the Europeans did during the medieval era was pretty frightening too. I think the best action is to let them live this phase out within their Mideastern borders. We should be thankful that medieval Europe wasn't bombed during the Middle ages. Letting the opposition to this religious fanaticism flee instead of fighting for their nations is the wrong course of action too. .
