A rather "politically incorrect" sales logo! www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,536283,00.html QUOTE: A 'Crazy' Name?: Mental Health Advocates Protest the Psycho Donut Shop Monday , August 03, 2009 A small donut shop in South Bay, San Francisco is under attack from local mental health advocates who dislike its “crazy” name — Psycho Donuts. The Psycho Donuts shop is known not only for its controversial name but also its creative confections, with donut specialties ranging from the “melodramatic,” “bipolar” (a nut and coconut mix), and the “manic malt,” according to NBC Bay Area. The shop owners see the names, along with their employee garb of lab coats and nursing gear, as innocent fun. However, the local Community Alliance United to Seek Equality group does not see the humor, concerned instead that the names might hurt and offend those who have suffered from mental illnesses. They are marching Monday morning in front of the shop to protest the shop's theme choice. Mental health activist Juliene Larson told NBC Bay Area, “[The shop and its customers] act as if it is all right for society to accept a Beavis and Butthead mentality in real life.” Click here for more from NBC Bay Area.

If I wasn't so cheap, I would drive over there and take a gander at it but I have no urge to drive 200 miles round trip to see a messed up donut shop.
I don't agree with them; I think the stigma of mental illness is tough enough on people seeking help and this certainly isn't helping people come out of the darkness to seek the help they need.

I was once told by a psychiatrist that laughing about your illness is a sign of recovery.
But perhaps it doesn't work when other people are doing the laughing.

The "Psycho Donuts" website is rather amusing! www.psycho-donuts.com/ This may be a reaction to all the "anti-junk food" rhetoric that Californians hear. Like you have to be crazy to eat donuts!

I think you're right and I think it's worse in a way because it's like the complainants are saying the 'image' is true, so must be suppressed instead of showing that they might have a mental problem but real mental problems are not more like that than hunchbacks are Quasimodo.

Having now looked at the site, I think the complainers are over-reacting. With the exception of the bipolar bun ( which ought to be renamed), none of the donuts have a specific medical condition. They are just - well - nutty, and comedy is full of crazy characters; it is what it does!
Someone with a mental illness has no reason to think that the donuts are poking fun at them; unless of course they are paranoid!

I would think that most bipolar people would find the idea of the bipolar bun hilarious .. . . at least some of the time.

Just the point Skylark. Maybe, if it gives a precise diagnostic name there could be just a case but otherwise, you can take every comedian you like down on this basis and for some older stuff it's been done. Everything we laugh at is people acting weirdly or impossible situations. Basil Fawlty was obviously manic probably paranoid, Mr. Bean is autistic, I actually have heard Ronnie Barker put down because his Open all hours character stuttered. They'll be moaning about Crazy Prices and Mad Bargains next! I'm in just the sort of really bad mood I haven't enjoyed for years at the moment that's kicked the intellect out of my usual detached apathy trying ot see all sides of the issue - something that usually kicks in for only the first few minutes of discovering Test Match Special has usurped Radio 4 again.

Why are people always offended? Everyone nowadays can be offended at something. Everyone's terrified that someone might be offended. In this life you really do have to learn to shrug some stuff off. As someone who's approaching 60 and sort of sensitive to this kind of thing, I hear jokes and piss-takings of elderly people all the time, on the radio and t.v. You know, colostomy bags, Tena lady (is that how it's spelt? I don't know, I don't have to buy them - yet), old people's homes, and on and on. Funny how comedians stop short at making jokes of some things but the elderly are fair game. Maybe it's because, if we're lucky enough, we'll all get to be old one day?
