Both of these endgame positions have been known for over 500 years. Do you see how to continue?

The Back Rank Defense. Black if he/she plays correctly can draw.



Black draws regardless of whose move it is. Let's say it's White's move and he/she plays Rook to g7 check. Where should Black's king go? ....To the corner h8 or the other way to f8?

BTW Black only draws if he defends against a Knight pawn or a Rook pawn.

Former chess world champion Garry Kasparov once said king and pawn endings were the most difficult of all endgames. Here's some more on corresponding squares. Black can defend if he prevents White from penetrating his position and always staying on the corresponding square to White's attacking King.

Chess endgames with opposite colored bishops as in the picture are often a draw. Of course beginners may have noticed that the bishops always stay on one color. With a knight or a same colored bishop Black would easily win.

This is a drawing fortress whereby Black can hold a draw. The King should always try to reach the corner with the same color as his Bishop. The Queen cannot win this position.

The Fortress! The weaker side creates a fortress which the stronger side will never penetrate. A draw! If the black knight + bishop + king don't build this fortress by setting up their pieces as described in the video there is the danger of losing.
