If a chessplayer doesn't know the Lucena position above he may allow his opponent to escape into the Philidor position and draw.

Hi Anna, many years ago my son explained the rudiments of the game to me and I beat him in my first try. It upset him so much that he went and got an electronic chessboard so that he could play against himself or the masters, I'm not sure which. I've never heard of that ruling that you have mentioned. As a child I used to play all the board games and loved them.
