The Philidor Position is again King, Rook and Pawn versus King and Rook. If a chessplayer doesn't know the Lucena position above he may allow his opponent to escape into the Philidor position and draw.

The Kings of course play an important role. kronks Big Lin blc mikemarshall Hi Anna, many years ago my son explained the rudiments of the game to me and I beat him in my first try. It upset him so much that he went and got an electronic chessboard so that he could play against himself or the masters, I'm not sure which. I've never heard of that ruling that you have mentioned. As a child I used to play all the board games and loved them.
