One for our American friends. What is the story behind that woman who drove up the wrong way at the White House...the one who had a baby with her in the car...and who was later shot dead by the Police? Was it REALLY necessary to shoot her dead? From where I sit, and the reports we have had of the incident in the UK, it does seem at the very least a massive over-reaction. Trigger happy cops, or justifiable homicide?

A witness claims the police first took Miss Carey's child out of the car and then fired the fatal shots.

I would not second guess the police. A car is a lethal weapon and they are not in a position to know instantly what someone's problem or 'issues' are when they are endangering citizens.
The police are charged with protecting the public, not treating wrongdoers with kid gloves. If you are going to drive through a barricade and pose a danger to others, defying police warnings to stop, then you had better expect to get shot.

As I understand it the car was stopped before the woman was killed. I think everyone agrees now that this mentally ill woman could have been safely taken into custody.
Of course I agree this is "Monday morning quarterbacking". During the Reagan era in Lebanon security forces failed to open fire on a suicide bomber who drove a truck full of bombs into a US military installation and blew himself up along with hundreds of US soldier.
