I love the photo that shows General Custer petting the dog. Notice that six of the nine officers in that photo are smoking a pipe. Tobacco was a major addiction even then.
As any student of American history knows, General Custer died fighting Indians at the Battle of Little Big Horn, also known as Custer's Last Stand, in 1876, or 14 years after this photo was taken.

The picture of Gen. Robert E. Lee after his surrender is also pretty impressive.
