This story is over a year old, but I feel it's worthy of discussion. There is a homosexual male leather bar in downtown Stuttgart, Germany, which has a notice on their door "No Women Allowed". This bar in Stuttgart has had absolutely no trouble as far I know and I'm sure there are similar bars elsewhere in Germany! I support a bar owner's right to pick and choose it's members just as this forum has that right.
03/ 8/2012 www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/03/08/wangs-chicago-gay-bar-ban_n_1327766.html Wang's, Chicago Gay Bar, Investigated Over Reports That It Bans Women During Busiest Hours A gay bar in Chicago's LGBT-centric Boystown neighborhood is under investigation by the state's Department of Human Rights based on reports that it bans female customers during its busiest hours. The bar, named Wang's, is the latest of several establishments in the area under fire as a result of allegations that it is not welcoming to women. This, despite the fact that the East Lakeview neighborhood is heralded, in a way made very clear by the slightly phallic giant rainbow pylons that line the streets, as a place where all can eat, meet and mingle. Just off the main Halsted Street strip of Boystown at 3317 N. Broadway, Wang's is attached to a well-liked sushi restaurant. The relatively intimate space is candlelit and shrouded in plumes of fog and soft red light obscuring its shabby-chic, Asian-themed decor -- paper lanterns, lavishly patterned wallpaper and a giant, ornate peacock mirror. But one piece of "art" adorning the walls -- a drink menu denoting "Men Only After 11 p.m." -- has been a source of frustration and anger for many area residents. And though the controversial policy appears to date back nearly two years, it wasn't until an inquiry from The Huffington Post that it came under scrutiny beyond about a dozen disgruntled Yelp reviews. Those reviews report women being denied service, treated poorly and outright being asked to leave during the bar's busiest hours. 'MEN ONLY' Chicago Alderman Tom Tunney, whose 44th Ward encapsulates the Boystown commercial district, reached out to the Illinois Department of Human Rights (IDHR) after The Huffington Post informed him of the policy. "Businesses within our neighborhood should be accommodating and respectful towards all patrons," Tunney said in a statement. Beyond being disappointing to women who want to drink at the bar, such a policy is illegal. Mike Claffey, a spokesman for the IDHR, confirmed that the state Human Rights Act prohibits discrimination on the basis of one's sex or other protected categories in places of public accommodation -- including bars. The IDHR is looking into the matter. "Anyone who believes they were denied or refused the full and equal enjoyment of the services of any bar or restaurant because of their sex or other protected category under the Act should contact the Illinois Department of Human Rights," Claffey said in a statement. 'ALL MONEY IS GREEN' A number of community leaders were disappointed -- though not surprised -- at the policy. "It seems utterly counterproductive to equality, ironically in the heart of a neighborhood that still fights for that exactly, and the whole while still 'prides' it self on... equality," said one promoter. But Wang's is not alone in Boystown Chicago when it comes to allegations of sexism. In 2010, a group of women launched a boycott of Spin Nightclub, another popular bar in the neighborhood, claiming that bar management had established an atmosphere that was unwelcoming toward women -- and specifically women of color. The matter was also the subject of a lawsuit. The owner adamantly denied the allegations and said Spin has been "welcoming women more than any other bar on the strip, since day one." "It's been like this for as long as I can remember," a female promoter who works in East Lakeview said of her experiences with sexism in area bars. "It's something I never thought to question because so much of Boystown is like that already that you come to expect it. "It's obvious that the bar owners, managers and staff just don't care, but they're biting themselves in the ass because all money is green," she added.

I just don't get it! If a bar is an all male gay joint, what woman in her right mind would want to go there......unless for a spot of unhealthy voyeurism?

I heard about the "dark rooms" which some male gay bars have where guests can do their thing with a partner or in a group. No women should want to be there!

well, surely if the boyscouts can allow only boys, a gay bar can take only gays if it wants. What's "discriminatory" about that?

I'm sure there are women only bars for lesbians so what's all the fuss about?
I'd have thought that as a bar for gay men it was pretty obvious who the clientele was so why would a woman want to go there?

Well, according to Sex In The City, there are "fag hags" (women who like to hang out with gay men). I dont know why. Issues probably, I imagine. But...I cant see why they'd exclude women from being there because if a woman wants to go in to a gay men's bar knowing what it is, then so what, really. She must have some reason to be there. A friend, a brother, whatever. I dont see why they felt the need to make a rule. BUT I still maintain that if the boyscouts can allow only boys, then a gay men's bar should be able to allow only men if that's what it wants to do.

I wasn't disagreeing; I was just curious. To me it seems like a lawyer trying to make a few bucks!

Some of these exclusively male gay bars have so called "dark rooms" en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dark_room_%28sexuality%29 So from their perspective banning women has the same justification that a male gay sauna club would use.
I guess I was guilty of being a "fag hag" once concerning one male homosexual. BTW a nickname that some of them use for women in general is "split tail".

'dark rooms' that gay men use seems to have such an unsavory kind of undertone to them. What are they exactly? Where gays for sex?
