To tip or not to tip... or should it be banned? A New York restaurant has banned tipping to spare customers the bother, while some restaurants in other US cities have already replaced the gratuity with a fixed optional service charge. So is the discretionary tip falling out of favour in the land where it's king?A young man and woman are sitting in a restaurant in New York, enjoying their second date. The man pays the waiter the bill and heads to the bathroom while the woman gathers her things. "How much did he tip?" she asks the waiter. He tells her. When the man comes back to the table, there is an angry exchange and she says she doesn't want to see him again. A tip of 8.5% brought that romance to a premature end. This story, told years later by the waiter that night, Steve Dublanica, reflects both how seriously Americans take tipping and how loaded with social meaning it has become. The size of tips has increased and the list of those who expect them is growing also, in recent years joined by staff in takeaways. Meanwhile, tip jars have proliferated to such an extent you may be confronted by one where you receive your sandwich and another one a few feet away where you pay for it. Should the custom of tipping be stopped?READ MORE...

I voted yes, for a couple reasons. ~Businesses are double-hitting us by this practice (charging more for a product already payed for by having us pay their employees for them too). ~Some people genuinely can't afford to tip; do they deserve crappy service or to have their food spat in? I think not. So it's bad that the quality and attentiveness of service should be BASED ON ABILITY TO BRIBE.

well in the uk you don't pay a tip until the end of the meal etc when you come to pay so they won't have known to have spat in your meal if you don't actually tip .
I think it should be voluntary , why should you be forced to tip especially if the service has been poor?

The original idea of tipping was to reward excellent service. We've gotten away from that with all waiters, taxi drivers, etc. expecting the tip regardless.
I'd like to see us get back to the original idea. When service at a restaurant is poor, don't tip. When service is exceptional, generously tip. However, don't blame the waiter or waitress for slow service when the kitchen is likely to blame.
Several years ago I took a cab from Logan Airport in Boston to a hotel in Cambridge. The cab driver took an incredibly circuitous route mumbling something about avoiding traffic. Clearly he was just jacking up the fare by letting the meter run up the charges, not to mention increasing my travel time. He was also surly rather than friendly. When we arrived I decided not to tip him. He was visibly angry, slammed the car door, gave me a dirty look, uttered a profanity, etc. That's a good example of the current tipping situation. Tips are expected even when they treat you poorly.

It shouldn't be stopped as everyone feels differently on whether to tip or not

I think it should be stopped. Pay the workers a decent wage and be done with it. With bad economies there are no guarantees of getting tips and some can't afford tipping especially when they are expecting 15-20%.
Its time restaurants stopped making the customer pay the wages of their wait staff. Food is already overpriced and to expect people to tack on another 15% is outrageous.

I feel the worker needs paid a substantial wage per hour as in any other job, and tips should be at the customer's discretion!

I don't think it should be banned but if people got a living wage tips wouldn't be so necessary in some jobs.

Not true. People wait on tables because it provides a wage that is way beyond anything else that you can get if you are a student or an artist (or anything else where you have to make due for a period of time.)

So you don't think people should be paid a decent wage?
And I worked as a waitress, cleaner and barmaid during my student days by the way.

Workers should always give of their best to hold on to their job. It shouldn't be the onus of the customer to have this worry.

Hi Gibby, I think the damage has already been done. The custom should not have been started in the first place. If you don't treat them properly, they even blow their nose into the food of people who don't tip or who send their food back for whatever reason. Someone suspected that this was happening and filmed the actions of the kitchen staff in secret. Some even pissed in the drinks of the diners who gave them any trouble at all. It was shown on Australian television. I would never send food back no matter what. The kitchen staff take that as an offence and retaliate in all sorts of ways. By the way, this took place in America. But who knows? it maybe takes place in other countries as well.

Hi Gibby, it is the kitchen staff who are responsible not the waiters. I for sure would not seek to irritate them in any way. It certainly makes you feel sick in the stomach to think, THAT kind of behaviour could be going on.

If you have a good waitress/waiter then tip them accordingly.
