Like most of us I suppose I want a lot of things in life. Wants are things that can grow like ivy inside you if you let them.
Needs are different. What I reckon is we've all got our basic human needs - food, warmth and shelter - but also some more intangible emotional needs.
I think we all need love in our life. When you're lonely and unloved it's teerrible. I also think we all need beauty. Whether it comes from nature, a poem or paiting, a piece of music or whatever doesn;t really matter. It'#s there and if you open your eyes you can always find it somewhere. I also think we need joy: that magical feeling that you can't force but when it comes you know its' th ebest feeling in the world
When it comes to wants I'm not greedy. I'm lucky enoughh to have three wonderful kids and a hubby who loves and takes care of me.
And one of my favourite shott stories is about the difference between wants and needs. It's by Tolstoy and it's called 'How Much Land Does A Man Need?'
In the story the man goes to a village and is told he can have as much land as he can walk around. He gets grteedy and walks and walks till in the end he drops dead. The people of the village bury him and say , 'six feet of earth was all he needed.'
So I say feed your needs and starve your wants.
Life's a lot better that way!
