Either way, Deyana, I've a feeling that Delhi will be a safer place now for women than it was three weeks ago. The city seems united in its anger, and the police will not so readily brush aside a rape accusation, which they have been accused of doing.
If I'm right, long may it last.

I know not all Singhs are Sikhs.
Anyway I don't see what bringing race or religion into it has to do with anything
What happened was disgusting and the blokes ought to be strung up till they're dead IMO!
(Preferably after they've had their cock and balls removed first without anaesthetic!)

The reasons for not reporting rape are fairly well documented. Most rapes in the UK are committed by men known to the accuser, and unless the woman was injured in the attack it becomes a "my word against his" scenario. When the issue is one of consent, I might well not bother to go to the police, and try to put the incident behind me.
But a violent street attack is something else, and I've read that women in India don't go to the police because of the fear they will be stigmatised.

Race or religion is relevant if it was a motivation to commit this crime by these men against this particular woman. like everywhere else India has its problems with racism and religious . discrimination if it had something to do with why this crime was committed then it should be looked at.

I just heard on the BBC news that the 5 men have been charged. They also gave out a statistic which is that 635 rapes were reported in Delhi during 2012 and only 1 was successfully prosecuted. Something must change.

Wonder how many are not reported? Also one prosecution? That ridiculous and they should be ashamed to even admit to that.

Wonder how many are not reported? Also one prosecution? That ridiculous and they should be ashamed to even admit to that. For obvious reasons I've been trying to stay off this and similar threads because when I say things a lot of people misunderstand me. I'll first of all repeat - just in case anyone still doubts my attitude - that what these blokes did was disgusting, contemptible and totally deserves the death penalty. I'll also repeat that this girl was an innocent victim. But if a rape is NOT reported how are the police supposed to know that one has taken place? How CAN there be 'figures' for 'unreported rapes?' And it wasn't that there was only one prosecution - there was only one SUCCESSFUL prosecution which is rather a different matter. Espeically when you consider that 635 is a very small number given the size of the population of India. I could say a lot more but I'm very nervous about saying what I feel in the wider context.

635 was just for the capital city not the whole of India and yes you are correct Donna it was.successful prosecutions I don't know the figure for total prosecutions.
I hope that the situation will change following this case and I hope that the demonstrations by both women and men in India will make a difference in changing attitudes to rape in that country.

I think we all agree that it's a pretty pathetic showing by Indian justice. Thanks for clarifying the figures, Gibby.
And I must admit that I can't see how this bunch deserve to live after what they did to that poor girl.

Toby comments.:- Deyanna did not believe that the name Singh was mentioined in connection with the Dirty Murdering Rapists, but here is the official report. As you all know the name Singh is taken by Sikhs who supposedly follow a ,' Religion of Peace, Understanding and Enlightenment', (ha ha hah ), perhaps some do but others certainly fo not !!
Five men charged with the gang rape and murder of a 23-year-old student on a bus in New Delhi last month are appearing in court for the first time.
The five, who could face the death penalty if convicted, are also charged with kidnap, robbery and conspiracy over the attack on December 16 that has sparked anger and protests across India.
The defendants have been named as Ram Singh, Mukesh Singh, Vijay Sharma, Akshay Thakur and Pawan Gupta.

Of course they are, Deyana. Anyone can be good or bad and it's got nothing to do with race, religion or whatever.
But of course to extremists people who are politically liberal on these things get regarded as either naive idiots or as some kind of traitor.
I just feel so sad for the poor lady who had to go through all this.
The bastards who did it to her deserve to die as far as I'm concerned.

It was me who associated the name Singh with Sikhs and I'm now feeling a complete fool because my GP is Singh, and he is not a Sikh. Doh!
But I did find a site with the defendants named, and two of them were Singh.
