news.yahoo.com/india-gang-rape-victim-singapore-treatment-031304697.html QUOTE: India gang-rape victim in Singapore for treatmentDec. 27, 2012 SINGAPORE (AP) — A young woman who was gang-raped and assaulted on a moving bus in the Indian capital was flown Thursday to a Singapore hospital for treatment of severe internal injuries that could last several weeks, officials said. The 23-year-old student, who is in critical condition, arrived in Singapore on an air ambulance and was admitted to the Mount Elizabeth hospital, renowned for multi-organ transplant facilities. The hospital said in a statement that she was admitted to the intensive care unit "in an extremely critical condition." It said "she is being examined and the hospital is working with the Indian High Commission (embassy)." The Dec. 16 rape of the woman and her brutal beating triggered widespread protests in New Delhi and other parts of the country and calls for the death penalty for the perpetrators of rape. It is punishable by up to life in prison. All six suspects in the case have been arrested. The rape has highlighted the extensive harassment that Indian women face daily in cities and towns, ranging from unwanted hands being placed on them to being blamed for causing the sexual violence. Even rape victims rarely come forward to complain because of the social stigma. Many women say they have structured their entire lives around protecting themselves and their children, and restricting their movements to avoid being molested. In a written statement, the Indian High Commission, or embassy, said it has received "many offers to help" the woman, who is "receiving full medical attention." Her family is also being provided all assistance" by the embassy, it said. The nearly daily protests in the heart of New Delhi following the rape have been frequently quelled by police using tear gas and water cannons. One policemen died of injuries suffered in the clashes. Police said she was traveling with a male friend in a bus when they were attacked by six men who took turns to rape her. The men also beat the couple with iron rods, stripped them of their clothes and threw them off the bus on a road. They were found by bystanders before being rushed to New Delhi's Safdarjang Hospital. The bus, which was empty except for the attackers and the couple, drove through the city for hours during the assault, even passing through police checkpoints. Press Trust of India quoted hospital medical superintendent, B.D. Athani, as saying Wednesday night that the woman suffered severe intestinal and abdominal injuries. She underwent three surgeries and parts of her intestines were removed, he said. He said the Indian government, "based on the advice of a team of doctors," made arrangements for her to be shifted to Singapore's Mount Elizabeth hospital because it has state of the art multi-organ transplant facilities. Also, the travel time of 5 ½ hours from New Delhi was considered less arduous. "With fortitude and courage, the (woman) survived the aftereffects of the injuries so far well. But the condition continues to be critical," he was quoted as saying. "The treatment (in Singapore) might take longer." The woman was on ventilator support during the 10 days she was at Safdarjang Hospital. Press Trust of India said the Indian government will bear all expenses of the woman's treatment. Doctors have described her as "psychologically composed and optimistic about future." It said her condition worsened late Wednesday after her pulse plummeted briefly, and that periodic bouts of infection were also a source of concern.

This is a totally appalling case. I read about it on the internet a few days ago and my heart goes out to the poor girl.
I feel nothing but contempt and disgust for the men who treated her so brutally.
But I wouldn't support the death penalty for them as some Indians are demanding.
But they need to be locked up for the rest of their lives for sure.

I'm fairly confident that one or more men will be severely punished; the backlash would never end if that didn't happen. Let's just hope that the right people are convicted,

Toby comments.:- The leader of the rape gang was called Singh. The attack seems to have been far worse than previously reported in that Mr. Singh pulled the Uterus out and casually tossed it out of the moving Bus. The Indian Polis spent a deal of effort in retrieving the organ. I would first torture the scum before hanging them but as I am a noted softy, others may prefer a more painfull way for them to be put down.

In addition to having her uterus ripped out the rape victim was beaten for an hour with iron rods. I worry about a dear female friend, who travels to India for business!

I'm not doubting what you say is true, though none of the reports I've seen have named the men, let alone which one of them actually inserted the rod. Here is a little bit about them and where they came from, and their (alleged) confession: Police say the men admitted after their arrest to torturing and raping the student "to teach her a lesson".

Toby comments.:- I looked at some Indian sites, they gavce some shocking details of which I cut the worst bits out and posted the sanitised version. I also looked at Yahoo where Indians give comments.
The whole thing is so unbelieveably nasty that it defies comprehension, suffice to say it was a drunken low caste attack on high caste folk, what amazed me was the Bus Driver also joined in and raped the poor woman !

So is the Indian press trying to claim this was a caste issue? That sounds a bit far fetched - not least if the ringleader was a Singh.

Toby comments.:- I know nothing about the Indian caste system except that it is racist through and through and Indians are the most Racist folk in all the world ! The Leader of the gang was a lowlife called Singh who enlisted a few other lowlives to rape the girl, they were all drunk at time. I don't know what caste the victim was, I don't even know where the Singh caste is in the caste pecking order. The Indian papers do suggest that there seems to have been a lot of jealousy emanating from the attackers to a couple who were better dressed and not lowlife. I suppose that all the details will eventually come out.

My understanding is that Sikhs don't have any part in the caste system at all, and deplore it.

There is a little information about the men in the link I provided in #9, Deyana.
I may be wrong to assume that the men called Singh are Sikhs; I remember now a student with the surname Kaur (the female equivalent of Singh) on my degree course, and she was a Christian. All very confusing, and Alan's link has in no way helped clarify!

hmm.. okay, I might be missing it, but I still can't find any mention of a name or religion. .. You are right: it doesn't: just where they lived. But I have seen it somewhere; the driver and a co-accused relation were both Singhs - and if they are not Sikhs then their ancestors must have been because otherwise they wouldn't have that name. Some Sikhs retain their previous family name as a middle name which helps identify them among all the other Sikhs: if they don't, and change their religion, they are lumbered with Singh forever, I suppose.

btw... if I may say so. the title of this thread is a little misleading. " Brutal rape rampant in India". Yes rape is a problem in India, but it comes in many forms. Most of it is just that - rape. And doesn't lead to murder. Also for the amount of people that live in India, and in comparison - do you know that Los Angles has THREE TIMES the amount of rape cases per day in the City as does India. This by no means lessons what happens anywhere in the world. Rape is horrific, but just to balance things out a bit regarding numbers. And the rape capital of the world - It's South Africa. Wherever, it doesn't matter, it has to be dealt with and taken seriously, that is the bottom line. I suspect that the true figure for rapes in India is a lot higher than the official ones.A lot are not reported, as mentioned in relation to this case many Indian women feel shame over it.

Well, 'Singh' is a middle name. Each person also has a last or family name. These have in recent years been used more often. While Singh is maintained as a middle name. However not all Singhs are Sikhs, I do know that. Regarding the name and ancestry, I have no idea... I am due to be in India in just a couple of weeks time, so this is of concern for me and yes, I will be landing in Delhi... This is from Wiki:
The adherents of Sikh faith adopted Singh as a surname in 1699, as per the wish of Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Sikh Guru.[9] In the Spring of 1699, on the day of Baisakhi, Guru Gobind Singh Ji (originally named Guru Gobind Rai Ji), made it mandatory for all Sikh males to append the name suffix Singh after their name and "Kaur" for Women.
Singh/Sinh is used by Sikhs, Bhumihar Brahmins, Maithil Brahmins and Kshatriya communities such as Kurmis, Marathas,[3][4] Gurjars,[citation needed] Rajputs, etc. as either a middle name or a surname. e.g., Kotwal Dhan Singh Gurjar, Chaudhary Charan Singh, Maharaja Bhim Singh Rana, Prahlad Singh Patel etc. The last name "Singh" is in fact used by a wider population from Bihar Jharkhand Punjab to Uttar Pradesh and from Kashmir down into Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Maharastra to Uttarakhand as well as the far eastern states of Manipur, Assam, Tripura, Sikkim, and even Bhutan, spanning the entire subcontinent and even reaching Southeast Asia, where in Thailand, as the Chakri Dynasty strove to empower Siam after the fall of the Ayutthaya Kingdom, Singh Singhaseni (1777–1849) was a prominent general, and Chao ("Lord") Racha Wong Singh governed Yasothon, 1815–1823. The name is also found in use among West Indians of Indian origin namely in places of Guyana, Trinidad, and Surinam, as well as people of Indian origin found in Mauritius and Fiji Island. ....... A section of around a million adherents of Sikhism that live abroad in Western countries only keep Singh or Kaur as their last name. This has caused legal problems in immigration procedures especially in Canada with Canadian High Commission in New Delhi, India for a decade stating in letters to its Sikh clients "the names Kaur and Singh do not qualify for the purpose of immigration to Canada" people with these common Sikh surnames have to change their last names before coming to Canada. The ban was denounced by the Sikh community, after which the Citizenship and Immigration Canada announced it was dropping the policy, calling the whole thing a misunderstanding based on a "poorly worded" letter.
I hope you enjoy your trip to India, Deyana.

Toby comments.:- I don't keep links and I looked at many sites, just trawling the net. I am certain about Singh though, and the drinking, also the Bus Driver joining in, this was mentioned more than once.
