The opposition is already trying to find cause to smack down Obama's choice to replace David Souter who is retiring from the U. S. Supreme Court, Sonia Sotomayor. From everything I've read today, they may have an uphill battle. Here's a link that has a bounty of information about judge Sotomayor. Unless something truly troubling comes out of left field, I wish her great good luck in the confirmation process. topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/people/s/sonia_sotomayor/index.html?inline=nyt-per

Conservative groups probably started investigating the 12 most likely candidates last fall, when it became apparent that they were going to lose.
Expect the attacks to center around these typical right wingnut points:
•Extremism •Activism •Results-orientism •Lack of Merit (due to being Hispanic a woman an "affirmative action hire") •Non-Judicial in Temperament •Heck, Even the Liberal New Republic etc. etc.

From what I read, he is replacing like for like, and again from what I read, the appointment is likely to be approved.

Don't you hate it when the pick someone for the color of their skin, ethnicity, or sex instead of choosing the best available?
This judge may be just fine but she wasn't chosen on the basis of her qualifications. They wanted a female latino and I think that sucks big time.

If she's qualified via credentials and intellect, why would you care about her gender and ethnic persuasion? I didn't know anything about her, but looking over her resume, she looks fine to me. And, in case you think I'm politically biased - maybe a little - but I was also for John Roberts. She'll be confirmed, I think.

Beth - They didn't start out looking for the best available. They started out looking for the best available female Latino. Don't you see the probelm with that?

Beth - They didn't start out looking for the best available. They started out looking for the best available female Latino. Don't you see the probelm with that? I can't help but wonder just how, exactly, you KNOW their motives in choosing this particular judge. Do you have contacts in the White House, or does POTUS phone you up and explain his motives??? Or perhaps you are simply giving way to your own prejudices. Don't like female Latinos. eh? ?

Had the nominee been a 'was', right leaning male, would you have wondered whether all liberal, ethnic female judges were given equal consideration?

She's qualified, well credentialed, and has upstanding record.
She'll get in with something like a 65-35 vote.
