OH - has everyone given up? Well, it looks like the interest in these games has temporarily waned. Skylark, you win the point, and thank you for playing. We'll give it a rest for a bit , then I'll think up some fresh fun to have, and post new threads.. BY THE WAY, Skylark is now in first place, with contest points! clickHOWEVER (oops) we are going to vote for best essay in the essay contest now, and the winner gets three points. Skylark, you need to win to keep the lead! But if Mike or Donna wins, there'll be a tie, and we'll need to run another contest next month. So I am looking for ideas for another contest. Anyone? what's the answer!

I work as an adviser in an advice centre. You're a counselor! That makes sense. I've always found you give good, level-headed advice.

No - absolutely not a counsellor! The advice we give is factual; helping people claim benefits, what to do if they are having problems at work, debt advice/management, landlord or neighbour problems.....and so on.

I looked up "counselor" in a British dictionary. It said: "a lawyer " ( a solicitor) It doesnt mean that here, it just means what you described.

Oh - fine! An example of two countries divided by a common language?
Over here a counsellor is someone who talks you through your problems: maybe known as a therapist in the USA?
We don't need to be legally qualified to do the job, by the way, though some of us are. Working with me is a retired tax inspector, a retired manager (hospital and sports centre so far as I can make out) , somewhere there is a retired accountant....not sure what our new bod did before she came, will have to ask.
