Teaching mythology and legend sounds a good idea. The trouble comes when it is treated as history and so not open to discussion as to what can be derived from it. Some Greek mythology isn't particularly clear as to what it means but others from the Teutonic cycle can be quite clear. One point where modern ethics are at odds with myth is that we don't like cheats. Even the Teutonic cycle makes the cheat Loki (Fire?) close to a Devil figure, perhaps under Christian influence. That's not true of most traditional myth and folklore where you win by hook or by crook and often the hero is the devious little guy - Odysseusm, Anansi, Coyote, Brer Rabbit ...
