St. Louis has become a very dangerous city. As a child I remember standing by the golden arches of St. Louis, but I have no desire to return! A dear friend of our family was murdered in the St. Louis area too, by a burglar, who just wanted to know what it felt like to kill someone.www.foxnews.com/us/2012/08/24/2-teenagers-arrested-in-shooting-death-former-college-volleyball-star/ QUOTE: Police arrested two teenagers in the shooting death of a former college volleyball player in St. Louis in what they suspect was a botched robbery attempt. The suspects are described as black males, both 18 years old, from St. Louis, Fox affiliate KTVI reported. Formal charges are expected to be filed later Friday, according to the station. Megan Boken, 23, a former all-state volleyball player from Illinois, was shot while sitting inside her white Volkswagen outside the apartment complex where she lived last Saturday. Boken was in St. Louis to visit her alma mater, St. Louis University, and play in the annual alumni game. KTVI reported that investigators, including a SWAT team, swarmed the home belonging to the suspected shooter and removed bags of possible evidence. They also apprehended a second suspect near the home, believed to be the shooter's driver, police said. Authorities said a key piece of evidence in the case is an item stolen in another crime, though they did not elaborate, according to the station. Investigators were able to link the item to the possible shooter. Funeral services for Boken were held Thursday morning in Wheaton, Ill. "She'll be remembered as an unbelievable teammate. She played on championship teams, but she was that teammate that kept everybody together," St. Louis University's athletic director Chris May told MyFoxChicago.com. Donations have topped more than $30,000 as a reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction in the case. It is the largest reward ever offered in the St. Louis area. "I understand that the St. Louis Police Department apprehended several suspects in this case," Boken's father, Paul Boken, said in a statement released to KTVI. "We are gratified with the progress in this case and with the efforts of the St Louis Police Department."

I live in a minor city. I've been here 5 years, and seen 6 shootings (two on the street in front of my house)(another in an apartment building i had to move away from)(one at the supermarket, another at the pharmacy, and still another around the corner from another place I had to move from.) ...I must admit, a goal of mine is to buy a house back out in one of the towns. City life has its advantages; towns are sleepy places out in the woods where you can feel you're 'nowhere' - it's almost a dead feel, like being isolated from everything; but I never saw shootings in my life until I moved to a city.
I don't wish to mischaracterize shootings as "a city thing" though, for one of the things I have learned by seeing people shooting their guns is that it has to do with the current young generation. They seem to think a handgun is just something you have, along with an android phone, some tattoos and some incredibly crappy music. It seems normal to them. It's their culture!
Of course that still doesn't mean I'm not horrified at the thought of someone being shot to death as she sat in her car. You don't get used to this. And it's scary.
And it makes me wonder, when I hear anyone suggesting if we all had guns, we'd be safer. That's nuts! I see all these shootings not because I live in a bad neighborhood, but because people have guns and it means inevitably some of them will get angry and use one!
