www.foxnews.com/us/2012/08/13/nj-man-accused-locking-girlfriend-in-bedroom-for-years/ QUOTE: Man accused of locking girlfriend in bedroom for yearsAug. 14,2012 PATERSON, NJ – Police searching an apartment for drugs found a woman they believe was kept padlocked in a bedroom for long periods of time over the last several years -- perhaps as long as a decade. The 44-year-old woman was discovered on Thursday by members of the state police street gang unit as they searched the Paterson home of 42-year-old Michael Mendez, believed to be a member of the Latin Kings street gang. State police spokesman acting Sgt. 1st Class Brian Polite said based on interviews and evidence, investigators believe the woman was kept in the bedroom for extended periods of time for the last two years and possibly up to 10 years. Investigators said the woman was sometimes let out of the room when her boyfriend was home. A neighbor said he has known Mendez for about a dozen years and that Mendez was a familiar face around the three-story brick complex where he lived. He said Mendez often could be seen outside, polishing a car and listening to music. The neighbor said he saw the woman a few times in recent years, though it was rare. The man, who refused to give his name because of worries over safety, said he remembered seeing the woman get into a car sometime in the last few years. Neighbors on either side of Mendez's top-floor apartment said they weren't aware that another person lived in the apartment. "I didn't see any woman," said a man who identified himself only as Buddy and opened his door only a few inches as he spoke. "This is the first I'm hearing of it." A maintenance worker, who declined to give his name also because of concerns over his safety, remembered the woman "cussing me out one time when I was doing my work." Mendez, who police say is a member of the Latin Kings, was being held Monday at Passaic County Jail. Authorities didn't know if he had an attorney. No one answered when a reporter knocked on his apartment door Monday. Mendez was charged with kidnapping, false imprisonment and other counts, including some related to the drugs officials said they were looking for in the first place. State police said they found 4,200 prescription pills valued at $100,000, 190 grams of marijuana valued at nearly $2,000 and nearly $23,000 in cash inside his apartment. According to court records, Mendez has two prior convictions for aggravated assault, one of which carried a three-month jail term. The woman was receiving a medical evaluation Monday.

Well...it will be interesting to see what comes of the case. He could have been threatening her to keep her quiet......but the comment by the worker that she was cussing him out.....seems to indicate she wasn't some meek follower......don't know.......

This sounds like a case of the Stockholm Syndrome!newyork.cbslocal.com/2012/08/14/captive-woman-denies-she-was-ever-held-against-her-will/ QUOTE: 'Captive' Woman Denies She Was Ever Held Against Her WillAug. 14, 2012 PATERSON, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) A New Jersey woman who police say was held captive for years says it's all a lie. Nancy Rodriguez Duran says her boyfriend is a good man who has never abused her. Speaking to reporters before 42-year-old Michael Mendez appeared in court Tuesday, Duran said she asked him to padlock the bedroom door with her inside. Duran said her boyfriend was going out and she was worried about maintenance workers coming into their Paterson, N.J., apartment and seeing her in a nightgown. Mendez pleaded not guilty to kidnapping and drug charges Tuesday and remains held on $1 million bail. Police believe Mendez is an alleged drug dealer for the Latin Kings gang. While executing a search warrant for drugs in his apartment, they made a stunning discovery. Detectives also found a woman, padlocked, inside of a bedroom of the residence, State Police Sgt. Brian Polite told WCBS 880's Jim Smith Monday. Investigators believe Duran was kept in the bedroom for extended periods of time for possibly up to 10 years. Some neighbors who spoke to CBS 2's John Slattery said this was the first they were hearing of a girlfriend. No, I never see his girlfriend. No. Just saw him all the time, neighbor Juancina Benjamin said. I used to see him in the neighborhood. I don't know about no girlfriend, another neighbor said. The New Jersey State Police Gang Unit allegedly recovered more than $100,000 in prescription drugs, along with a quantity of marijuana and $22,000 in cash. Drugs may be one thing, but some nearby residents who know Mendez, said it's farfetched that the woman was being held against her will. He was a good person, very good person. I don't think it's true. No, I don't one neighbor said. I always see him and his girlfriend. I see them two days before the incident happened, always with him, Stephanie Ramos added. Police based the charges on testimony from the woman and evidence at the scene, possibly from a journal she kept.
