I saw an apron in a shop yesterday that made me think of you, Chris. It had a message on it saying: 'Don't mess with the Chef!' I love it!!!!!!!!

When I started this thread I never imagined that it would turn out to be so interesting. Chefmate has shined a light on this topic. Thanks for that.
I certainly would not include family members in the category of prison penpals. Nor would I include someone who knew the perpetrator previously (such as a close friend). And people like Chefmate who had a reason to get connected (problems with her son) are not in the same penpals category that I had in mind.
The thing that has me shaking my head in amazement would be the long distance penpal romances started by the woman with a heinous murderer whom she has never met.
Explain to me please how it is that Scott Peterson has so many female admirers corresponding with him and even sending him money. And the point was raised above as to why so many of these women are Europeans willing to spend their scarce savings to travel to San Quentin and other prisons to visit a murderer they've never met.
I'll grant you that I've never been able to understand women -- especially these women.

Curiosity pure and simple; a safe kind of fantasy too, perhaps, because if someone is to be executed there will be no messy reality to get in the way upon release. There may also be lonely people who believe this is one person to whom they can offer some comfort.
It is the women who correspond with inmates serving lesser sentences, then meet them on release, who are more of an inigma to me. They swallow their lies then find out the truth too late. I saw a group of them on one of those ghastly early morning chat shows complaining that they had not been able to find out the truth about their partner's crimes before it was too late .

I think one of my posts got lost here. So I'll try again. Certainly family members who correspond with death row inmates are not loons. Mothers and wives have nurturing programmed in. I didn't have someone like ChefMate in mind either (when I started this thread).
I'm thinking about those European women who spend their limited savings to visit a murderer whom they've only met via correspondence after he was convicted. I'm thinking about the women who send love letters to Scott Peterson even knowing that he murdered his pregnant wife and dumped her body in the bay. Those women also send money to Scott Peterson. He has a fan club of European women who keep his $$$ account pumped up. Someone please explain those women to me.

That's odd. When I reposted the missing post simultaneously reappeared. Looks like something isn't working quite right on this board.

I have a question of the members posting on this board.
I gather most of you are located in Europe rather than America but I also sense no hostility from the members because I do visit a death row inmate.......why?
Are Europeans more forgiving than Americans and if so why?
Maybe this is why so many European women travel to our death rows?

I don't suppose there's any simple answer to your fascinating question, Cheffie.
I do know that we have many American members on this board - Beth, Pumpkinette, Mindy, Drewsmom and a few others - who certainly WOULDN'T condemn you for your choice.
I can think of a few who would but I can also think of some of our British or European members who would too.
I belong to another board which is run by a VERY extreme man (he's British but he wants to execute ALL criminals LOL!) and I've tried to post slightly more rational points of view on the subject and, funnily enough, even HE has admitted that he enjoys my posts even though he doesn't agree with me.
You also have to consider that MOST of the members of this board were personally invited by me to join it and that in every case I saw in them qualities that made me know they'd be an asset, they'd be tolerant and compassionate.
Some of the members who've joined of their own accord take slightly different views but that's their right and I don't condemn them.
As someone who's spent some years visiting inmates and campaigning for prisoner's rights I also understand how much hostility that raises in some people.
What do other members think about Chefmate's death row penpalling?
Personally, I think it's her choice and I applaud her for her courage in doing it and having the guts to be open about it.
I'd say the same whatever her nationality was.
