Monsignor William Lynn is in custody after being convicted Friday of child endangerment for his handling of clergy abuse complaints. Lynn says he was following orders from the cardinal when he lied about why accused priests were removed from their jobs. He says he couldn't stop the transfers of priests to new parishes. The 61-year-old Lynn faces up to seven years in prison. No sentencing date has been set. Nick Ingala is a spokesman for the Boston-based lay Catholic group Voice of the Faithful. The relevant question surely is whether he broke the law. If he did then obeying orders is not an excuse. The only possible mitigation would be if he was somehow threatened into breaking the law, but the article does not describe this from what I can see.

Here is a fuller story. There is to be an appeal, and from what I can see, the crime committed was in not reporting suspect priests to the police. www.guardian.co.uk/world/2012/jun/30/monsignor-william-lynn-seeks-release-prisonThat does sound a bit odd to me. He presumably knew about complaints, but it was open to the victims and their families to go direct to the police and I do wonder why they didn't.
