I thought it might be interesting to post examples of how different artists interpret and perform the same song.
I'll start with the classic Carole King song, Going Back.
For my money the Dusty Springfield version is in a class of its own. Apparently Carole King cried when she heard Dusty singing her song!

Phil Collins, Going Back
Dusty Springfield, Going Back
The Byrds, Going Back
Freddie Mercury, Going Back
Carole King, Going Back

Oh that was interesting to hear. I'm a bit of a Carole King snob though i think. If there's multiple versions available, I'm biased towards hers. It's funny though because while King was (is?) a great songwriter, she wasn't all that effective at performing the songs. But ..I just hear personality, and her Tapestry album back in the 70's hooked me (I'm such a dinosaur i remember them, yes). (lol. I got a little chuckle out of The Byrds' version. Those guys can only sound like The Byrds! You can't mistake them.

Hunny, I'm a Carole King/Tapestry addict. I keep going back to it. I was given it for my 16th birthday after I'd been on holiday with a friend and her family and we drove for miles just listening to it over and over. Carole King is unbeatable, I think. I don't know what you mean about performance because I think her singing is incredible, but if you mean that she just sits at the piano and performs, doesn't really sell the song any other way, I could see what you mean. She was in a play some years ago and I went to see it just to see her. Afterwards, in the bar, an actor friend of mine introduced me to Carole, very beautifully, very casually, and I was therefore offered the chance to sit in friendly conversation with them over a pint. What an opportunity! I freaked out; I was so over-awed that I got completely tongue twisted and left... (I'll have to listen to the Dusty version later, Lin, looking forward to it).

But it's still a great story, you did meet her. I've been watching Gilmore Girls re-runs lately, and I noticed not only is the theme song hers, but she also played a part in a few episodes (as the music store owner). I was very impressed with her acting. It made me wonder if she'd done any other television or movies, so I looked, and wow, has she ever: www.imdb.com/name/nm0005580/filmoseriesAs for her "not being effective at performing her own songs", that's not really my estimation. (It's hers.) I saw a documentary where she said this of herself, and explained that her early career was based on thinking of herself as a writer, not a performer. She would write songs for other artists to do. I'm a bit puzzled at her lack of confidence myself, because while Tapestry was a studio performance, it was a performance just the same,a great one. There should be no reason she couldn't re-create that onstage. Well it seems after a while she figured that out and started doing concerts, singing, at the piano. And every time I've seen her, the people just adore her. Hmm. I think I'll look for a dvd.... Wikipedia en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carole_King
