Nellie Geraghty, 79, desperately tried to cling on to her bag as she was targeted by thieves while walking near her home.
But she suffered serious head injuries and was left critically ill after the incident in Oldham, Greater Manchester.
Police said she died in Royal Oldham Hospital Hospital at about midnight yesterday.
Two youths aged 14 and 17 have now been arrested on suspicion of robbery.
Mrs Geraghty was found collapsed in an alleyway near her home just before noon on Thursday.
The pensioner's handbag was missing from the scene but the widow was still clutching the broken handle in her hand.
Inside had been a blue velvet bag containing the ashes of her husband in a small box, and also £200 in cash.
Mrs Geraghty had carried the ashes around with her since the death of her husband 17 years ago.
Superintendent Catherine Hankinson, of Greater Manchester Police, said earlier that the theft would shock "even hardened criminals". It was throught the victim had been on her way to a regular lunch date at a nearby care centre when she was attacked.
A police spokesman said: "The elderly woman who was found unconscious in Shaw has now died.
"Two boys, aged 14 and 17, have been arrested on suspicion of robbery and remain in police custody."

in a civilized society, the two pieces of shyt are guilty of first degree murder and would be executed, although, since they are juveniles, they can't be. obviously though, EVERY rational person knows that they should spend the rest of their lives in prison unfortuntely, for the humans there, this trash will probably be walking the streets in less than ten years.
