Brakewoman Serita Shone, who only joined the GB bobsleigh team this year, was said to be in a serious but stable condition after crashing during a training run while preparing for the British Championships, which start on Friday.
Her driver, Fiona Harrison, also suffered a head injury and is under observation in hospital.
GB performance director Gary Anderson said: "Serita has had spinal surgery and is still under sedation. My focus is now on the two athletes and their families."
Shone, 22, from Dorset, switched to bobsleigh from heptathlon and had been selected to compete for Britain on the second-tier Europa Cup circuit this year with a view to stepping up to the top-level World Cup series by the end of the season.
She had been using her Twitter account to provide updates of her progress at Winterberg. In her last post on Tuesday she wrote: “Day two of sliding … great confidence day and some great skills being developed … few crashes but still alive.”
