1...e-6 (P-K3 in descriptive notation)
It's getting easier but I did slip badly when Mary came round on Wednesday night and she was smoking so I had a couple and I ended up buying a packet and - well, I'm back on whatever the nicotine equivalent of the wagon is from today!
(I like the French Defence very much. My favourite players are Alekhin, Petrosian, Staunton and Nimzovitch!)

I like Alekhine and Staunton too! Dr. Tarrasch, Bronstein, Spassky and Bobby Fischer are more my type of players. 1...e6 2.d4 ( if 2...d5 then 3.Ktc3 )

No one's played THAT against me before!
It's sort of like the Milner-Barry line in the Caro-Kann.
I don't think there's much sensible alternative to:
4...PxP

9. 0-0-0 Actually we're playing a Blackmar Diemer Gambit by transposition. I started scoring very well against the Burn/Rubinstein d5Xe4 Variations of the French Defense after i started transposing to the BDG with f2-f3. Max Euwe played e6 against the BDG and so you're playing the Euwe Defense to the BDG, but your a6 is a different path.
I have the most trouble with the Winawer and MacCutcheon Variations of the French!

The MacCutcheon variation is very dangerous for both sides and leads to exciting games. I was playing safe in this game but I do enjoy it.
Unfortunately the Winawer is much less dangerous and there's a very simple way to play against it!

Unfortunately the Winawer is much less dangerous and there's a very simple way to play against it! 9...Rf8-e8 As White i play the Qg4 line against the Winawer and have had trouble when Black sacrifices the g and h pawns! I leave my king in the center and I'm convinced White can force the h pawn accross the board to a Queen. I often underestimate Black's counterplay! MacCutcheon specialists just know the main lines well and it's harder to deviate. 10. Ktf3-g5
