I was rather surprised that this movie was determined by scientists to be the saddest movie ever. I know males especially seem to be moved by these sport competition dramas.
Actually I've never seen this film.www.thirdage.com/news/saddest-movie-ever-is-1979-boxing-flick-according-to-scientists_07-28-2011 QUOTE: Saddest Movie Ever Is 1979 Boxing Flick, According To ScientistsHave scientists found the world's saddest movie? Hollywood's churned out plenty of tearjerkers over the years, but according to new research, one 1979 weepie tops them all. According to Smithsonian Magazine, a scene in "The Champ," Franco Zeffirelli's remake of a story of an aging boxer trying to resurrect his career, has been used more often than any other film scene to evoke sadness in test subjects. “I found it very sad. I find most people do,” said Jared Minkel of Duke University, a scientist who has used the scene in his research. “'The Champ' seems to be very effective in eliciting fairly pure feeling states of sadness and associated cognitive and behavioral changes.” Researchers at the University of California-Berkeley found in 1988, after testing the reactions of 500 undergraduate students, that the scene evoked pure sadness more effectively than any other. Since then scientists have used it to study such subjects as whether sad, depressed people smoke more. The scene in question comes near the end of the film, when 9-year-old actor Ricky Shroder cries over the death of his father. According to Smithsonian, the scene has been cited in over 300 scientific articles. The closest runner-up for the "saddest movie" title? "Bambi."

Here's the sad ending of "The Champ". The film "Bambi" gets 2nd place as the saddest film ever. I saw that film as a child and cried a lot when Bambi's mother was killed.

My mum refused to take me to see Bambi for that reason, Anna. I'm not sure why, because she let me read books that reduced me to floods of tears: Black Beauty was one - I found the descriptions of cruelty to Ginger heartbreaking.
Perhaps a child howling in the cinema was too much to bear. I've still never seen Bambi!

;D My mother threatened to ban me from reading Heidi. And I WAS banned from watching Lassie.
Never watched The Champ. Not sure I'm inclined to either. I've just finished watching the first season of The West Wing - shed a tear at that! - I doubt I need this sort of drama in my life.

My Mother and Father called me hard hearted for not blubbing at The Champ, as the tears rolled down their faces.
Bless them!

LOL!
Right, that's decided. I am definitely never watching the Champ. I expect I cried at Forrest Gump too by the way. I remember crying during Billy Elliot.... I can't read the last chapter of Winnie-the-Pooh because I get hysterical.
