Singers Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony are getting a divorce, PEOPLE Magazine reports.
"This was a very difficult decision," the couple told the magazine. "It is a painful time for all involved and we appreciate the respect of our privacy at this time."
The couple also said they have reached "amicable conclusions on all matters."
They wed in 2004 and have 3-year-old twins, Max and Emme.
Lopez was a judge on "American Idol" last season, but has not yet announced if she will return to the show. In addition to her musical career, she has starred in films including "The Wedding Planner," "Maid in Manhattan," and "The Back-up Plan." In April, People put her on its cover declaring her the "World's Most Beautiful Woman."
The marriage was the third for Lopez, 41, and the second for Anthony, 42. He was previously wed to 1993 Miss Universe winner Dayanara Torres. She was married to dancer Cris Judd and before that, to waiter Ojani Noa. Each of their previous three marriages lasted just a year.

That was actually a pretty long marriage by Hollywood standards!!

I'm surprised it even lasted that long. I had given it 3 years tops.

But gay marriage threatens the institution of marriage!
These long-term affaires weaken it far more. If they want to shack up together, fine, go ahead and do it, and maybe after two or three years, if still together, then consider making it a legal marriage so that it actually means something.
What they have done instead, is out of some bizarre kind of morality cheapened the concept of marriage to mean a big show where nobody takes any oof the vows seriously because they fancythe pants off each other (literally ;D )
There is one country where temporary marriages are traditional, sometimes only lasting the night or less. That is Iran. It's not the only similarity I see between the USA and Iran by any means either!

I know what you are saying Liberator!! I have a friend I grew up with that has been with her partner for 15 years......they can't get married......they own a house together.....they both work and have gotten their degrees....they pay their taxes.......(they even have a dog).....but if one of them were to get sick and be rushed to the hospital...the other one probably wouldn't be allowed in there.........but yes....they are certainly a threat to commitment and love...................probably scary to the neighbors too.........

Of course long-term relationships can work without people being married. On the other hand, why can't they marry? Is it some religious scruple or something about divorce?

Not all states recognize gay marriage. I believe they had a ceremony somewhere that recognizes it somewhere....but most states don't.

Well it is isn't it? The only other reason could be is a sham marriage to get someone residency rights or some such I suppose.
Pretty much anything goes in some cultures as long as it is under the 'protection' of marriage. It's the get-out-of-jail free card for prostitution or sex with young girls. The wedding ring and a bit of formality square it all with God or their society.

I did smile at this, though, from the same article:
These days, some girls who want to travel with their boyfriends and be allowed to stay in the same hotel room or avoid arrest by the moral police might have a temporary marriage.
I can remember the days when unwed people used to check into hotels as married couples - even as recently as the 1960s/ 70s!

Affair in the air? Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony announced their surprising split last Friday, but the duo came close to parting ways two years ago because of Anthony's fling with a flight attendant. In the new Us Weekly, out now, a source says that Anthony, 42, hooked up with a flight attendant he met aboard a private plane in 2009. "Marc and Jennifer almost split up over it," the source tells Us of the couple, parents to 3-year-old twins Emme and Max. Seconds another insider: "Jennifer was going to leave him then, but Marc begged her to stay. They went to marriage counseling and she decided to give it another shot. He was someone she truly loved. Although Anthony and the "American Idol" judge, 41, weathered the storm of infidelity, his raging jealousy over Lopez's successful career continued to drive a wedge between them. Anthony's controlling behavior over his wife's wardrobe and business endeavors -- and his own unfounded paranoia about her and other men-- also factored in to their major decision to end their seven year marriage. today.msnbc.msn.com/id/43841236/ns/today-entertainment/
