You are walking down a country lane. There is no one for miles. Off to the side you see sack. You go over and investigate. Inside is cash. All small bills. When you get home you count it out and it is about $25,000 cash. You turn on the news and there is a story about an armored car that lost a bag of money. They had new drivers that did not follow procedure and had left a bag on the bumper. It must have fallen off. They are tracing the route now. They are offering a reward of $1,000.
The bills are unmarked. The are all small bills.....so easy to use without causing suspicion.......the armored car service is insured. It's not your fault the idiots made a mistake. They are going to get fired either way.
Do you keep the money or call it in?

rhetorical question. of course you give it back. you do take the grand as a reward though. as well as being the right thing to do, it is the only intelligent thing to do. unless you are relatively well off, in which case you wouldn't need the money anyway, if you start spending money that you wouldn't ordinarily have, you would be busted

But it is all small bills......as long as you didn't make any large purchases.....you could probably pay for things here and there for quite awhile and no one would notice.

I could, but most people could not, especially someone who has had nothing for a long time. they would be out blowing it almost immediately. look how many lottery winners are bankrupt within five years of winning the lotto

I'd turn it in. I'd feel like a gigantic jerk!

I'd turn it in. I'd feel like a gigantic jerk! because you turned it in, or if you didn't?

Turn it in of course. Doesn't matter if the company is insured. Doesn't matter if the operators were idiots. It's still theft i.e. taking something that does not belong to you. Doesn't make it any less theft because of the surrounding circumstances.
Can't see that it's a dilemma at all. Either you are a thief or you are an honest person.

I know.....it sounds like I would keep it. But I have gone back to a store that undercharged me for bird food. I knew they were a family business and I happen to be in a family business and every little bit counts. So even though I would sit there for a little while and have all sorts of evil thoughts for a little while......I would call the company and have them come by and pick it up and probably lobby for them not to fire the guys.

Yeah....I had gotten a few things so I didn't notice otherwise it would have saved me the trip all the way back to the place!!! They looked really stunned that I did it......which is a shame. People walking off with stuff and all that.....don't realize they are a lot of the cause of jacking up the prices for all of us.

People walking off with stuff and all that.....don't realize they are a lot of the cause of jacking up the prices for all of us. it's a pretty sad commentary for sure. until about fifteen years ago, there used to be a gas station near pine bluff, california on highway 395 where the owner left the pumps unlocked when he closed. you put the money in a box and pumped your gas. sadly, too much trash ruined it for the real people, and he had to start locking everything
