You work for a large company..........it makes a ton of money and the bosses make huge salaries.
By chance you notice that one employee is taking money from the cash sales. Not a lot....but just a little here and there. You know this employee is really struggling financially......has a sick child....and insurance just doesn't cover all the costs.
Would you turn them in?

I'd have a word with him - maybe say that the employer has noticed people nicking cash, and is keeping an eye on us all.
It would be a lie, of course, because I'm not sure I'd follow his up by reporting him.
Maybe I'd send an anonymous note to personnel, naming no names; then they really would keep an eye on everyone and my lie would become a half-truth.

One problem with theft is that when it gets noticed all staff will be under suspicion. I once worked for a terrible company (terrible bosses, terrible employees, terrible product) and theft was a common problem. Every time anything went missing, we were all treated with the same disdain and threats from management. It was intolerable for some people.
I attempted to voice my suspicions about one person who worked for the security team and was shouted down, branded some sort of 'grass', and even physically intimidated into silence by his friends and boss. Eventually that person stole the entire payroll. Stole his mates' wages! I laughed so much I thought I would die.

.....has a sick child....and insurance just doesn't cover all the costs.... Remind me again...this is that wonderful healthcare system that is incapable of improvement? I'd feel a lot less inclined to keep quiet in this country where we do at least have a properly funded health service. For all its faults, no-one is turned away for lack of adequate insurance. And I think the first thing I'd do is let him know I knew what he was doing.

I'd probably do what Skylark suggested. I'd also suggest that we coworkers get together and donate some of our money to help. Every little bit helps. That might also help the employee stop stealing.

It always is the problem that everyone could be held responsible, what if someone else got accused or fired........but what if the person gets fired and loses their insurance? But what if you confronted the person and now they know and they try to put it off on you? These thoughts would just drive me crazy!!
I think I would be tempted to.....in front of a lot of office people.....suggest doing a fundraiser to help with expenses for their sick child.....really make it a group office thing to show support and help......and then maybe in an office meeting make suggestions to change some of the routines on how cash was handled..........if after that they didn't catch the hint......I would just tell them flat out, that I knew and it had to stop or I would have to report it.
Or better........I would call Skylark and have her fix it..........
