Just an idle thought I have had. Imagine a competition to see who could dig an x cubic meter hole the fastest, but at the start of it one competitor is given a shovel while the rest are given spoons. They did nothing to 'earn' this leg-up it was just down to chance. Would their win be worthy of 'celebration'?
Isn't this analogous to any sporting or perhaps any competition where the competitor who is most naturally talented wins, especially if they haven't worked as hard as some of the others?

Sport and singing are entertainment, so they're actually winning the prize for being good to watch/listen to.
I would not buy a record of anyone else singing The Fall's songs (except as a novelty), even though they're likely a better singer than Mark E Smith (couldn't be worse), and even though he hasn't really worked on his voice, unless you call smoking and drinking lots is working on a voice. But he is the only person in the world who would be a convincing singer of the Fall's songs.
(Mind you - what if someone with a spoon still manages to beat the bloke with the spade?)
