I suppose the PC spirit of the times is negative towards Christianity and religion. Another obstacle to creating a "unified mind set" among the populace. But I think 'the pc spirit of the times' is really not an answer to my question as to what it is about Christians that non-Christians find so obnoxious. IMO, it's because many christians (and naturally, the most boisterous ones) talk the talk but don't walk the walk. How often do we here them speaking to the evil of others, yet it's quite obvious they themselves are not without sin.

I suppose the PC spirit of the times is negative towards Christianity and religion. Another obstacle to creating a "unified mind set" among the populace. But why Anna? You keep posting stories where Christians have been discriminated against, and you're obviously angry about that. Fair enough. I see your point. But I think 'the pc spirit of the times' is really not an answer to my question as to what it is about Christians that non-Christians find so obnoxious. "The PC spirit of the times", whatever that means, didn't come from nowhere. Dearest Riotgrrl, Some people see me as a reactionary Christian bigot and that's fine with me! Christians of course are very diverse as well as non-Christians. I would certainly be rejected by the Amish Christians and they have every right in my book to decide who they want in their society! The Amish are lucky they don't have much of a presence in Michigan or these Marxist government bigots would start giving them the same treatment that this Christian lady is getting for wishing to live with a like minded person.
I find big government as a rule very scary and if government thinks it can dictate who our roommates are in Soviet fashion that must be stopped!
If an atheist group had a community with a sign saying No Christians Allowed! I would respect their wish and defend their free speech.

The silly thing about this law is it dictates what can go in adverts, but seems to leave room-mate advertisers free to reject or choose whom they wish. I have yet to read of anyone supporting this crazy situation; even in the video link Anna posted, all three pointed out the anomaly of the law.

What I find so odd is 'roommate'. It sounds so much more intimate than (I believe) it actually is.

I always thought it meant just that, and thought how appalling it would be to have to share your bedroom with someone who wasn't a partner. And of course those poor American children who have nothing to play in but a yard - which as every British child knows, is a small concrete area used for storing building materials.

It looks like sanity has prevailed in this case. It's still an outrage that charges could actually be filed in the first place.www.foxnews.com/us/2010/11/04/hud-dismisses-complaint-woman-ad-seeking-christian-roommate/?test=latestnews QUOTE: HUD Dismisses Complaint Against Woman for Ad Seeking 'Christian Roommate' Published November 04, 2010 | FoxNews.com The U.S. Housing and Urban Development Department has dismissed a civil rights complaint against against a woman in Grand Rapids, Mich., who posted an advertisement at her church last July seeking a Christian roommate. The complaint filed by the Fair Housing Center of West Michigan.had accused the unidentified 31-year-old woman of posting an ad that "expresses an illegal preference for a Christian roommate, thus excluding people of other faiths." HUD acknowledged that statements suggesting a preference for one religion are prohibited, but it concluded that the woman in this case didn't violate the law. "In light of the facts provided and after assessing the unique context of the advertisement and the roommate relationship involved in this particular situation potentially involving the sharing of personal religious beliefs, the Department defers to Constitutional considerations in reaching its conclusion. Accordingly, the Department finds that there is no reasonable cause to believe that the Act was violated in this matter," HUD said. Joel Oster, an attorney with the Alliance Defense Fund, which represented the woman free of charge, had described the case as "outrageous." "Clearly this woman has a right to pick and choose who she wants to live with," he said. "Christians shouldn't live in fear of being punished by the government for being Christians. It is completely absurd to try to penalize a single Christian woman for privately seeking a Christian roommate at church -- an obviously legal and constitutionally protected activity."

Thanks for the update Anna. It is a pity the case was ever brought; it might spark off a lot of provocative adverts from people trying to push the limits, thugh I hope not

The Fair Housing Center of West Michigan needs to seriously re-evaluate what they spend their time on money on.............if this is what they do......it is another example of what is wrong with our gov't.

Anna If Christians are being targeted as a 'soft option' (which, I agree with you, is unfair), what is it about Christians that has pissed off so many people do you think? The "Christians" like those from Westboro Baptist Church, Robert Tilton, and other hypocrites. We all are hypocrites and we Christians are not perfect at all, but there are those that will scream hatred (WBC), scam you (Tilton), or outright lie or judge you when they did or are doing the same damn thing. To me, these are not what being a Christian is all about. Yes, a Christian should be loving to everyone whether or not they are a believer in God, in another faith, or nothing at all; but one should be able to have a say when it comes to finding a roomie. If someone wanted a roomie that wasn't messy, I wouldn't apply. i know I'm disorganized. If someone wanted a fellow Muslim roomie, I would respect that. If someone wanted a roomie that doesn't listen to techno, looks like I'm out of the picture. You know what? That's okay! I'd go nuts if I had to roomie with someone that blared country music!

Skylark, how could anyone in current-day USA think of Christians as passive or easy touches, when they're always battling away in court for their right to be counsellors, or to advertise for room-mates, or whatever? I don't buy that. If you use your head and don't buy into the stereotypes, it is easier to understand.

Anna's post reminds me of an incident in my youth.
Just after graduating from College, I took my first job as an engineer with Westinghouse in Virginia. When I arrived, I found that there was a real shortage of affordable housing. This was Newport News with a large shipyard building naval vessels including Polaris nuclear submarines and the Enterprise, a nuclear aircraft carrier. A lot of US Navy and contractor personnel had moved there. Finding a good place to live wasn't easy.
One of the engineers suggested that I contact another young engineer who had recently rented a two bedroom apartment in the only nice new apartment unit in town. They thought he might want a room mate. So I followed up, and sure enough, he was a clean cut young college grad and he did want a roomate to share the rent. We shook hands on the arrangement and I arranged for the mover to deliver my belongings to the apartment.
Now you have to understand that this was my first salaried position with a good income. I had just taken delivery on a brand new automobile. I was looking forward to some good times chasing girls and living the singles life.
When I arrived at the apartment for the first time, I was shocked to find a very large painting of Jesus Christ hanging on the wall above the sofa. I thought, "Oh my, what have i gotten myself into."
The apartment was quite nice and he turned out to be a good guy. I got him to move the Jesus painting to his bedroom.
Ahhh, memories.

"very large painting of Jesus Christ"
When I house shared there was a large Klimt - The Kiss I think it was.
Much better - although one of the roomies was a thief and a trollop, but that's another tale.....
