For those outside the UK. William Hague a member of the Government has been prey to rumours about his relationship with a male aide. The aide has resigned and Hague has felt compelled to talk in detail about his marriage.
I'm in two minds - I admire his chutzpah for tackling this head on and on the other hand I cant help feel he should have ignored the gossip - he's given it some weight by responding.
Either way, it's a sad state of affairs (no pun intended) that someone's sexual choices can still be used as 'blackmail'.

Its not so much his gayness (or otherweise)
its that he took this nice bloke (good looking) and gave him a job, first as a driver and then as a special adviser, paid for out of taxes. His qualifications are simply a mediocre grade at history, nothing too earth shattering. And being promoted from ebing a driver seems a little stellar. Of course whilst driving him around he could have shown himself to be insightful, brilliant, perceoptive etc and so may warrant the job.
But if so, why did he leave it?
At least when they did share a room William paid for it himself.

Stop twitching your net curtains the pair of you. This is a non-story.
The special adviser has degrees in both history and law. His salary was only £30k, which is a pretty average grad salary for the SE. The relationship between politicians and advisers is different from the normal employer/employee relationship in that the political insight and personal relationships matter far more.
He left the job because gossips and sweetie-wives like you and Guido Fawkes have used his appointment to gossip behind your hands about his boss. And now his boss and poor Ffion's history of miscarriages has had to be dragged out in public.
Shame on both of you for even giving this story a moment of attention. Prurient, speculative, nasty.

But you would have to admit that Hague has shown a remarkable, and a totally unexpected naivety in sharing a hotel room with a male assistant; however innocent it actually was. He MUST have been aware that if it came out (which it was bound to do) the press would have a field day. I always had a great respect for Hague as a politician, but have to admit that in this his antenna have badly let him down. What a silly Billy!

It was their choice to discuss their private life and I think blaming one thread on a mb for perpetuating or adding to this story is a tad hysterical lol! It's almost as if the content of the op hasn't been read or understood!
I'm still not sure just ignoring it would have been a better way to go, it's legitimised by responding, especially in the way Hague did.

It's great that we have freedom of speech, and the internet has made it possible for individuals to publish their views to ever-wider audiences.
But there has to be some kind of balance with a right to privacy.
That some blogger decided to 'out' William Hague based on the slimmest of evidence, a rumour which would, naturally, have greatly upset his wife, as it included an allegation of infidelity, tests the limits of freedom of speech.
I am really disgusted at the whole thing.

Men used to share beds, and think nothing of it. Lincoln did with one of his aides. No one cared. It wasn't even worthy of notice.
Sharing a bed does not mean that anything sexual is going on (as most people could confirm, I'd imagine, if they were honest). Sharing a room - jesus. I've shared a room with my brother and his wife, my mother and her husband, some people I don't know (cousins of a cousin), oh god, and wards full of people I'd never met before. It's nowt.
I always liked Hague, god help me - the adult Hague, anyway. A much better bloke to have a drink with than Blair.

I've shared rooms with loads of people, too - as did Tracey Emin: I'd like to thank everyone I have ever slept with Some of you are squirming out there Hoping and praying I won't reveal your names Don't worry, we all know who you are
So thank you Sallie Popplewell And Rosemary Barber Klee Hitchens And Annalise Sinclair Natasha Kefalonis Angelika Adonis Tracey Emin And 37 more
I'd like to thank everyone I have ever slept with Thank you from the bottom of my heart And from the heart of my bottom I know it must be rotten To provide the raw material for art
I'd like to thank everyone I have ever slept with The casting directors and the fans There's a tent in my brain Where I've embroidered all your names I love you And 'je ne regrette rien'
I'd like to thank everyone I have ever slept with Like an elephant, I never forgot My make-up artist Pierre My landscape gardener My manager, my mother, and God
